Complementary Modernisms in China and the United States: Art as Life/Art as Idea is the result of a conference where Chinese and Americanist art historians addressed the development of modernism in their respective cultural traditions. The chapters juxtapose historical developments without attempting to map connections or influences. Instead, both national modernisms are presented as part of the larger terrain of global modernism, but generated within specific, localized circumstances. This juxtaposition reveals significant differences as much as any particular moments of connection or similarities, disrupting any standard narrative of the primacy of French (or European) avant-garde art and its influence on more belated and peripheral communities.The differences that are revealed are not merely the result of the very different historical trajectories of each country’s moves into modernity. Rather, differences in attention and methodology are just as important, in particular the focus on the post-1980 development of Chinese art as part of the modernization of Chinese culture and economy, rather than the American perspective on post-1980s postmodern qualities. Paradise from behind the Iron Curtain provides a detailed survey of the key responses to Milton's work in Hungarian state socialism. The four decades between 1948 and 1989 saw a radical revision of previous critical and artistic positions and resulted in the emergence of some characteristically Eastern European responses to Milton's works. Critical and artistic appraisals of Milton's works in the communist era proved more controversial than receptions of other major Western authors: on the one hand, Milton's participation in the Civil War earned him the title of a 'revolutionary hero,' on the other hand, religious aspects of his works were often disregarded and sometimes proactively suppressed. Ranging through all the genres of Milton's oeuvre as well as the critical tradition, the book highlights these diverging responses and places them in the wider context of socialist cultural policy. In addition, the author presents the full Hungarian script of the 1970 theatrical performance of Milton's Paradise Lost, the first of its kind since the work's publication, including a parallel English translation, which enables a deeper reflection on Milton's original theodicy and its possible interpretations in communist Hungary.

How the challenge of depicting biological systems can generate productive questions for artists and scientists. An artist drawing cell division faces a problem: what is the best way to visually represent a dynamic process? This anthology, edited by an artist and a philosopher of science, explores drawing as a way of inquiring into living processes at the molecular, cellular, and organismal scale. In doing so, drawing emerges as a tool for relaying and uncovering knowledge - a pathway for research, not an end result. Incorporating drawing studies and contributions from schol- ars in the humanities and life sciences, Drawing Processes of Life addresses epistemological issues arising in cell division, insect metamorphosis, protein folding, and other ever-shifting biological systems. Transkulturalität zählt zu einem der relevantesten Paradigmen in den Kulturwissenschaften, wenn es um die Beschreibung der Begegnung und des Miteinanders von Kulturen geht. Wenngleich das Paradigma als Theorie in verschiedenen Disziplinen und Diskursen zirkuliert, hat es hinsichtlich seiner Anwendung in der Praxis bislang noch keine umfassende Beachtung erfahren. Anhand einer fundierten praxeologischen Analyse der documenta 12 zeigt Barbara Lutz, wie Transkulturalität für das Kuratieren von Ausstellungen in globalen Zusammenhängen produktiv gemacht werden kann. Sie weist damit den Weg für Museen und andere Ausstellungsinstitutionen, die sich Prozessen der Dekolonialisierung stellen.
