"When women succeed, we all win. Breaking Through explores the mentoring relationship, and unravels its effects on women, businesses, society, and the economy. In 2010, author Martine Liautaud founded the Women Business Mentoring Initiative (WBMI) to support women entrepreneurs with the targeted advice and personalized guidance that can only come from a mentor. In late 2015, she set up the Women Initiative Foundation to broaden her action in favor of women in the business world. This book encapsulates the WBMI mission and other similar experiences inside international and US corporations, showing how mentoring and sponsorship can take many forms—and how each form benefits women in business. Through evidence-based narratives, you'll learn what real women have gained from both sides of the dynamic, and why they credit mentoring with the strength of their business success. These stories show how mentoring yields increased efficiency, improved financials, more effective management, increased innovation, a broader talent pool, and increased revenues, and how helping women succeed in business leads to increased philanthropy and improves community sustainability. Gender equality has made huge strides in the US and Western Europe, but this progress is only apparent in the junior levels of the workplace. This book shows how mentoring women entrepreneurs and women managers provides the key that opens the door to the new economy. Understand why mentoring is key to women's economic advancement Learn how mentoring yields tangible benefits beyond the workplace Delve into the experiences of real mentor/mentee pairs Consider the effectiveness of various types of mentoring Despite the increasing opportunities for women in business, statistics and pervading stereotypes suggest that true gender equality is still far on the horizon. Mentoring and sponsorship can be tremendously helpful to women looking to achieve great things—the wisdom of experience is a powerful asset in business strategy and decision-making, and the mentor/mentee relationship benefits everyone. Breaking Through makes a compelling case for the effectiveness of mentoring, with real women's stories of success"--

The Nordic states were among the first in the world to enact general gender equality and anti-discrimination laws with low threshold enforcement mechanisms. Today, the Nordic countries top the World Economic Forum's Gender Gap Index -but they have still not succeeded in closing the gender gap. This book draws a diverse and complex picture of the long, uneven, and unfinished process towards substantive equality in four Nordic countries: Sweden, Finland, Norway, and Iceland. It presents the Nordic gender equality model's systematic use of three measures: overarching gender policies, legislation that has an explicit or implicit impact on gender relations, and gender equality and anti-discrimination laws with low-threshold enforcement systems. What potentials and limitations do the Nordic gender equality and anti-discrimination law regimes have to combat individual discrimination and structural inequality? Can these regimes function as a driver of political, legal, economic, cultural, and social change and as a corrective to laws, policies, and practices that uphold existing inequalities and, if so, to what extent? Can weaknesses in the equality and anti-discrimination laws and the way they are enforced hamper efforts to close remaining gender gaps? Rather than looking at the Nordic gender equality laws and policies in isolation, the book situates their development and transformative potential within a changing European and international political and legal landscape.

"Women and Inequality in a Changing World explores the obstacles women continue to face to their equal participation in all areas of daily life - political, social, and economic - which persist despite the growth in the education of girls, large scale social movements, and political waves. The volume widens and deepens understanding of women in relation to the inequalities they face, based not only on gender, but also on race, class, religion, and more. It also highlights the progress that women have made, and how this progress contributes to the creation of more peaceful and prosperous societies. This interdisciplinary book brings together leading scholars and practitioners from across the globe to provide a wide range of perspectives and experiences, examine crucial questions, and offer new ideas and innovative solutions to increasing the role of women moving forward. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of gender studies, women's studies, and political science, as well as practitioners working at the intersection of women and global issues. Praise for RESULTS AT THE TOP " Results at the Top is full of stories and examples of male leaders accepting accountability for greater gender diversity in their companies. What's different? They're not doing it out of compliance, but out of a personal commitment to advancing women in leadership." — Johan Bjorklund, Vice President and General Manager, Ericsson North America "Barbara and Richard help envision an achievable future where gender-intelligent leaders and advocates will unleash 100 percent of the world's human capital and create the future we all cherish. For the common good of human wellbeing, it's up to us to begin working together, NOW!" — Woody Buckner, Chair and CEO, Buckner and Company "The evidence is overwhelmingly clear—gender diversity at the senior leadership level correlates with greater business performance. Yet the number of women leaders remains very low and is truly unacceptable. Results at the Top is extremely valuable in providing new paradigms and actions to close this gap." — Bob Cancalosi, GE Director of Customer Leadership Education "The male leaders featured in Results at the Top are true change makers who realize that gender equality relies as much on men as it does women. Annis and Nesbitt provide an important new contribution to understanding how genuinely to change future outcomes for women. Their solid advice can help to drive diversity goals and accelerate progress in boardrooms and executive suites around the world." — Kathleen Taylor, Former President and CEO, Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts "I wish I had read Results at the Top and become more gender-intelligent much earlier in my career. Luckily, it is never too late to learn. This book provides business leaders deep insights and opportunities for creating value through high performing, gender balanced organizations." — Lars Terney, Partner, Nordic Capital "Annis and Nesbitt focus their lens on the unconscious biases that exists in the systems, procedures, and policies guiding our companies today. As paid work becomes increasingly central in women's lives, the history of their labor struggles assumes more and more importance. This volume represents the best of the new feminist scholarship in twentieth-century U.S. women's labor history. Fourteen original essays illuminate the complex relationship between gender, consciousness and working-class activism, and deepen historical understanding of the contradictory legacy of trade unionism for women workers. The contributors take up a wide range of specific subjects, and write from diverse theoretical perspectives. Some of the essays are c

This new edition of a classic feminist book explains how one of the great historical revolutions - the ongoing movement toward equality between the sexes - has come about. Its origins are to be found, not in changing ideas, but in the economic developments that have made women's labour too valuable to be spent exclusively in domestic pursuits. The revolution is unfinished; new arrangements are needed to fight still-prevalent discrimination in the workplace, to achieve a more just sharing of housework and childcare between women and men, and, with the weakening of the institution of marriage, to re-erect a firm economic basis for the raising of children.

"An incisive, intersectional look at the mother of all gender biases: a resistance to women's authority and power. Every woman has a story of being underestimated, ignored, challenged, or patronized in the workplace. Maybe she tried to speak up in a meeting, only to be talked over by male colleagues. Or a client addressed her male subordinate instead of her. Despite the progress we've made toward equality, we still fail, more often than we might realize, to take women as seriously as men. In The Authority Gap, journalist Mary Ann Sieghart examines the wide-ranging implications of this critical gender bias. She explores its intersections with race and class biases and the measures we can take to bridge the gap. With precision and insight, she marshals a wealth of data from a variety of disciplines-including psychology, sociology, politics, and business-and interviews pioneering women like Booker Prize winner Bernardine Evaristo and Janet Yellen. The Authority Gap offers a "a credible roadmap that is capable of taking women from the margins to the center" (Mary McAleese, former president of Ireland)"--

If this relationship is not harmonious in practice, senior leadership should work to assure a fit between stated values and actual company practices.
