The papers in this volume were selected and revised from among those presented at the conference: Gender and Social Transformation: Global, Transnational, and Local Realities and Perspectives, Beijing, China in 2009. Through case studies and interview data from across the globe we see how intersectionality and inequality are contextualized shaping womens agencies, gender relations, identity, the politics of belonging, power structures, institutional arrangements, and empowerment (self and/or collective) in local communities and cultures influenced by transnational and global networks and processes. Those who experience inequality, the politics of exclusion and social injustice by virtue of gender, ethnicity and/or class and other differences are the most vulnerable in the face of new adversities, including those that occur in response to globalization. Broader theoretical and methodological contexts for these nation- and region-specific studies are provided in essays by leading gender theorists. Divisions of labor, migration, war and peace-building are among the specific topics addressed in papers from China, India, Israel, Korea, Northern Ireland, Turkey, and the United States.

Praise for RESULTS AT THE TOP " Results at the Top is full of stories and examples of male leaders accepting accountability for greater gender diversity in their companies. What's different? They're not doing it out of compliance, but out of a personal commitment to advancing women in leadership." — Johan Bjorklund, Vice President and General Manager, Ericsson North America "Barbara and Richard help envision an achievable future where gender-intelligent leaders and advocates will unleash 100 percent of the world's human capital and create the future we all cherish. For the common good of human wellbeing, it's up to us to begin working together, NOW!" — Woody Buckner, Chair and CEO, Buckner and Company "The evidence is overwhelmingly clear—gender diversity at the senior leadership level correlates with greater business performance. Yet the number of women leaders remains very low and is truly unacceptable. Results at the Top is extremely valuable in providing new paradigms and actions to close this gap." — Bob Cancalosi, GE Director of Customer Leadership Education "The male leaders featured in Results at the Top are true change makers who realize that gender equality relies as much on men as it does women. Annis and Nesbitt provide an important new contribution to understanding how genuinely to change future outcomes for women. Their solid advice can help to drive diversity goals and accelerate progress in boardrooms and executive suites around the world." — Kathleen Taylor, Former President and CEO, Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts "I wish I had read Results at the Top and become more gender-intelligent much earlier in my career. Luckily, it is never too late to learn. This book provides business leaders deep insights and opportunities for creating value through high performing, gender balanced organizations." — Lars Terney, Partner, Nordic Capital "Annis and Nesbitt focus their lens on the unconscious biases that exists in the systems, procedures, and policies guiding our companies today. Fascinating revelations and common sense solutions makes Results at the Top a must read for any leader hoping to succeed in this changing business landscape." — Lara Warner, Chief Compliance and Regulatory Affairs Officer, Credit Suisse Group AG

Why are there so few women in science? In Breaking into the Lab, Sue Rosser uses the experiences of successful women scientists and engineers to answer the question of why elite institutions have so few women scientists and engineers tenured on their faculties. Women are highly qualified, motivated students, and yet they have drastically higher rates of attrition, and they are shying away from the fields with the greatest demand for workers and the biggest economic payoffs, such as engineering, computer sciences, and the physical sciences. Rosser shows that these continuing trends are not only disappointing, they are urgent: the U.S. can no longer afford to lose the talents of the women scientists and engineers, because it is quickly losing its lead in science and technology. Ultimately, these biases and barriers may lock women out of the new scientific frontiers of innovation and technology transfer, resulting in loss of useful inventions and products to society.

Several studies have shown that financial inclusion impacts poverty and income inequality and higher levels of financial inclusion lead to lower poverty and income inequality and promotes inclusive economic growth. However, the gender gap in access and usage of financial services remains pervasive across all the countries in South Asia. Patriarchal societies, low involvement of women in decision making, low empowerment of women, no voice in the family matters are some of the factors influencing women's financial access in the region. Although literature has developed on access to financial services in general, there is not much academic work available on access to digital financial services for women. Gender Bias and Digital Financial Services in South Asia: Obstacles and Opportunities on the Road to Equal Access examines access to financial services to women in general in South Asia and specifically their access to digital financial services.
