Scientific contributions authored by distinguished experts from the field of early education are published periodically within the framework of the series Scientific Studies on the Work of the "Haus der kleinen Forscher" Foundation. This publication series serves to foster informed dialogue between the Foundation, scientists, and practitioners with the aim of giving all early childhood education and care centres, after-school centres, and primary schools in Germany scientifically sound support in fulfilling their early education mandate. This fifth volume in the series focuses on goals of science education at the level of the children, the early childhood professionals, and the pedagogical staff at after-school centres and primary schools, and on process-related quality criteria for science teaching at pre-primary and primary level. In their expert reports, Yvonne Anders, Ilonca Hardy, Sabina Pauen, Beate Sodian, and Mirjam Steffensky specify pedagogical content dimensions of the goals of early science education at pre-primary and primary school age. In addition to theoretically underpinning these goals, the authors present instruments for their assessment. In his expert report, Jörg Ramseger formulates ten quality criteria for science teaching. Early childhood professionals and pedagogical staff at after-school centres and primary schools can draw on these process-related criteria when planning lessons and conducting self-evaluations of science learning opportunities at pre-primary and primary level. The concluding chapter of the volume describes the implementation of these expert recommendations in the substantive offerings of, and the accompanying research on, the "Haus der kleinen Forscher" Foundation.

Diese Schriftenreihe dient einem fachlichen Dialog zwischen Stiftung, Wissenschaft und Praxis, mit dem Ziel, allen Kitas, Horten und Grundschulen in Deutschland fundierte Unterstützung für ihren Bildungsauftrag zu geben. Der vorliegende zehnte Band der Reihe mit einem Geleitwort von Hans-Günther Roßbach stellt die Ergebnisse der Studien zu Wirkungen naturwissenschaftlicher Bildungsangebote auf pädagogische Fachkräfte und Kinder im Vorschulalter vor. Mirjam Steffensky, Yvonne Anders, Julia Barenthien, Ilonca Hardy, Miriam Leuchter, Elisa Oppermann, Päivi Taskinen und Tobias Ziegler untersuchten die Wirkungen naturwissenschaftlicher Bildungsangebote auf die kognitiven und motivationalen Kompetenzen von pädagogischen Fachkräften und Kindern in Kitas. Insgesamt konnte aufgezeigt werden, dass die Teilnahme an naturwissenschaftlichen Fortbildungen in einem positiven Zusammenhang mit den naturwissenschaftlichen professionellen Kompetenzen pädagogischer Fachkräfte stehen und dass Kinder aus Einrichtungen mit einem expliziten naturwissenschaftlichen Schwerpunkt höhere Lernfreude und höheres Selbstvertrauen in Bezug auf Naturwissenschaften zeigen als Kinder in Einrichtungen ohne naturwissenschaftlichen Schwerpunkt. Astrid Rank, Anja Wildemann, Sabina Pauen, Andreas Hartinger, Sabrina Tietze und Rahel Kästner untersuchten die Interaktionsqualität und mögliche sprachliche Bildungswirkungen im Kontext naturwissenschaftlicher Bildungsangebote bei Vorschulkindern. Die Studie legt nahe, dass naturwissenschaftliche Fortbildungen die naturwissenschaftlichen Kompetenzen wie auch den Spracherwerb der Kinder unterstützen und die Prozessqualität der Fachkräfte in naturwissenschaftsbezogenen Situationen bestimmen können. For the first time, the story of how and why we have plumbed the mysteries of reading, and why it matters today. Reading is perhaps the essential practice of modern civilization. For centuries, it has been seen as key to both personal fulfillment and social progress, and millions today depend on it to participate fully in our society. Yet, at its heart, reading is a surprisingly elusive practice. This book tells for the first time the story of how American scientists and others have sought to understand reading, and, by understanding it, to improve how people do it. Starting around 1900, researchers—convinced of the urgent need to comprehend a practice central to industrial democracy—began to devise instruments and experiments to investigate what happened to people when they read. They traced how a good reader’s eyes moved across a page of printed characters, and they asked how their mind apprehended meanings as they did so. In schools across the country, millions of Americans learned to read through the application of this science of reading. At the same time, workers fanned out across the land to extend the science of reading into the social realm, mapping the very geography of information for the first time. Their pioneering efforts revealed that the nation’s most pressing problems were rooted in drastic informational inequities, between North and South, city and country, and white and Black—and they suggested ways to tackle those problems. Today, much of how we experience our information society reflects the influence of these enterprises. This book explains both how the science of reading shaped our age and why, with so-called reading wars still plaguing schools across the nation, it remains bitterly contested.

The Comstocks of Cornell is the autobiography written by naturalist educator Anna Botsford Comstock about her life and her husband's, entomologist John Henry Comstock - both prominent figures in the scientific community and in Cornell University history. A first edition was published in 1953, but it omitted key Cornellians, historical anecdotes, and personal insights. Karen Penders St. Clair's twenty-first century edition returns Mrs. Comstock's voice to her book by rekeying her entire manuscript as she wrote it, and preserving the memories of the personal and professional lives of the Comstocks that she had originally intended to share. The book includes a complete epilogue of the Comstocks' last years and fills in gaps from the 1953 edition. Described as serious legacy work, the book is an essential part of Cornell University history and an important piece of Cornell University Press history.
