Abstract

The Consultative paper issued by the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision (Basel II) cites the failure of bankers to adequately stress test exposures as a major reason for bad loans. Sample quotes from this crucial document: * ""Banks should take into consideration potential future changes in economic conditions when assessing individual credits and their credit portfolios, and should assess their credit risk exposures under stressful conditions."" * ""The recent disturbances in Asia and Russia illustrate how close linkages among emerging markets under stress conditions and previously

Abstract

Businesspersons--including engineers, managers, and technoprenuers-- are trained and drilled to make things happen. Part of their practice is to guide others on building monuments of success and to make difficult decisions along the way. However, they will all realize that the decisions they make eventually determine the chances they take, and that they are all fraught with uncertainty. This book is developed to give businesspersons the opportunity to learn operational risk management from a systems perspective and be able to readily put this learning into action, whether in the classroom or the office, coupled with their experience and respective discipline.

Abstract

Why is uncertainty so important to politics today? To explore the underlying reasons, issues and challenges, this book's chapters address finance and banking, insurance, technology regulation and critical infrastructures, as well as climate change, infectious disease responses, natural disasters, migration, crime and security and spirituality and religion. The book argues that uncertainties must be understood as complex constructions of knowledge, materiality, experience, embodiment and practice. Examining in particular how uncertainties are experienced in contexts of marginalisation and precarity, this book shows how sustainability and development are not just technical issues, but depend deeply on political values and choices. What burgeoning uncertainties require lies less in escalating efforts at control, but more in a new - more collective, mutualistic and convivial - politics of responsibility and care. If hopes of much-needed progressive transformation are to be realised, then currently blinkered understandings of uncertainty need to be met with renewed democratic struggle. Written in an accessible style and illustrated by multiple case studies from across the world, this book will appeal to a wide cross-disciplinary audience in fields ranging from economics to law to science studies to sociology to anthropology and geography, as well as professionals working in risk management, disaster risk reduction, emergencies and wider public policy fields.

Abstract

Projects have become the de facto method of implementing business strategy and operations. As such, understanding how projects relate to business strategy and managing projects strategically is increasingly important to effective and efficient business management. This book is designed as a short and concise treatise on how to go about doing that. We start by figuring out how the project relates to the rest of the business and environment and what separates it from other projects and functions. We then discuss how the reader can use principles of strategic management to better organize and manage the various projects that they deal with on a daily basis so that they are strategic in nature. In essence we show how to approach answering the important strategic questions in project management like "Why is the project being implemented? How does the project relate to the major strategic goals of the organization? How do we accomplish the performance goals for the project so that they help achieve the major strategic goals of the organization?"

Significant loss to business occurs through fires in the workplace. Whether large or small, fire causes personal suffering, damage to plant, equipment and buildings, and loss of business.Fire legislation has changed over the past few years, especially with the introduction of European Directives. New regulations mean that employers have to carry out fire risk assessment and then, as a result of their findings, put in place control measures to prevent loss of life. Fire Hazards in Industry has been designed to cover, in general terms, exactly what is required of employers. It is
