This book presents a new search paradigm for solving the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP). The intrinsic difficulty of the TSP is associated with the combinatorial explosion of potential solutions in the solution space. The author introduces the idea of using the attractor concept in dynamical systems theory to reduce the search space for exhaustive search for the TSP. Numerous examples are used to describe how to use this new search algorithm to solve the TSP and its variants including: multi-objective TSP, dynamic TSP, and probabilistic TSP. This book is intended for readers in the field of optimization research and application. In addition, this book: Provides a complete understanding of the attractor concept in heuristic local searches Presents a new search paradigm for solving a NP-complete combinatorial problem Introduces the use of the attractor concept in dynamical systems theory to reduce the search space for TSP.

"Scientific progress doesn't always precede engineering advances; it often follows. Answering questions isn't always the goal; finding questions often is. Sometimes we seek to strengthen conventional wisdom; sometimes to surprise it. What if we could rethink nurturing research, through policy and management, to harmonize with the nature of research?"--

Eric T. Bell 0. Heaviside Mathematics is a tool for thought. A highly necessary tool in a world where both feedback and nonlinearities abound. Similarly, all kinds of parts of mathematics serve as tools for other parts and for other sciences. Global Mobility of Research Scientists: The Economics of Who Goes Where and Why brings together information on how the localization and mobility of academic researchers contributes to the production of knowledge. The text answers several questions, including ""what characterizes nationally and internationally mobile researchers?"" and ""what are the individual and social implications of increased mobility of research scientists?"" Eight independent, but coordinated chapters address these and other questions, drawing on a set of newly developed databases covering 30 countries, including t

Scientific progress - from creating better medicines to building better bridges or designing improved technology networks - can lead to intriguing business opportunities, but business expertise is not always a natural companion to scientific excellence. Scientists require a nuanced understanding of the modern business environment to successfully navigate the commercial world and maximise the economic potential of their ideas. Management for Scientists explores the core theories and practices in management studies today in a context applicable to those working in the scientific industries. Essential business concepts covered include corporate strategy and business planning, organisation structure, management and operations, and labour and human resources, and these are all viewed through the prism of building, maintaining and developing a scientific business in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, engineering, maths, and computing sectors. Chapters feature a range of real-world examples from modern science-driven businesses, presented by experienced scientists with demonstrated strategic and economic business expertise.

This book explores optimal decisions for companies and governments to build a sustainable supply chain and economy by applying analytical models from new perspectives. Taking differentiated carbon permit-buying and -selling prices into consideration, it investigates the optimal emission permit cap under the “cap-and-trade” regulation and discusses how to establish a two-period carbon tax scheme with a two-period planning horizon. Moreover, it examines how to balance the economic and environmental performances in a closed-loop supply chain, how to implement trade-in program when employing green technologies, and how to strategically use the blockchain technology to improve the environmental performance of supply chain under the carbon tax policy. This book is written for students and researchers who are specialized in the field of operations management with a focus on environmental sustainability. It is also beneficial for specialists and executives at companies that are facing carbon emission regulation challenges, as well as government officials who develop the emission control policies.

Innovative technologies are changing the way research is performed, preserved, and communicated. Managing Scientific Information and Research Data explores how these technologies are used and provides detailed analysis of the approaches and tools developed to manage scientific information and data. Following an introduction, the book is then divided into 15 chapters discussing the changes in scientific communication; new models of publishing and peer review; ethics in scientific communication; preservation of data; discovery tools; discipline-specific practices of researchers for gathering an

This book is an expository introduction to the methodology of sensitivity analysis of model output. It is primarily intended for investigators, students and researchers that are familiar with mathematical models but are less familiar with the techniques for performing their sensitivity analysis. A variety of sensitivity methods have been developed over the years. This monograph helps the analyst in her/his first exploration of this world. The main goal is to foster the recognition of the crucial role of sensitivity analysis methods as the techniques that allow us to gain insights from quantitative models. Also, exercising rigor in performing sensitivity analysis becomes increasingly relevant both to decision makers and modelers. The book helps the analyst in structuring her/his sensitivity analysis quest properly, so as to obtain the correct answer to the corresponding managerial question. The first part of the book covers Deterministic Methods, including Tornado Diagrams; One-Way Sensitivity Analysis; Differentiation-Based Methods and Local Sensitivity Analysis with Constraints. The second part looks at Probabilistic Methods, including Regression-Based methods, Variance-Based Methods, and Distribution-Based methods. The final section looks at Applications, including capital budgeting, sensitivity analysis in climate change modelling and in the risk assessment of a lunar space mission.
