Abstract

Religion and Cult in the Dodecanese during the First Millennium BC publishes the proceedings of the conference of the same name, held in Rhodes in October 2018. Religion has always been one of the major components of peoples' lives, an integral part of social, economic and political contexts, contributing to the formation of culture and history. In order to study and understand the religious and cult practices of a particular region, it is necessary to explore their various expressions through material culture and written sources. The oldest known cult remains in the Dodecanese can be dated to the end of the 10th and early 9th centuries BC and throughout the 1st millennium BC. They demonstrate the existence of a vibrant island society with various evolving cult practices. As a major stopover on maritime trade routes, the southeastern Aegean was influenced by contacts from throughout the Greek world and beyond. The contributions to this volume draw on archaeological and literary sources to explore both the development and continuity of cults in the Dodecanese, from the Early Iron Age through to the 1st century BC.

Abstract

This book sits at the intersection of two topics, rabbinic constructions of sexuality and the rhetoric that the rabbis of late antiquity used to promote their sexual mores. Satlow goes underneath the rabbinic legislation about secuality, asking how they understood sexuality - what assumptions about sexuality inform rabbinic dicta and law? The study also examines how these assumptions moved between Palestinian and Babylonian rabbinic communities and the kinds of arguments that the rabbis thought would be effective in promoting their legislation.

Abstract

Scholastic Rabbinism is a study of two early rabbinic documents, Pirke Avot and the Avot d'Rabbi Natan. Saldarini's study examines the literary connections between these related documents while at the same time drawing larger conclusions about their provenance and what they contribute to our understanding of early rabbinic scholasticism.

Abstract

This volume remains one of the only major studies of the Peri Pascha. The Peri Pascha was authored by Melito, the Christian bishop of Sardis in the second century CE, as a homily. It is notable for its early, extensive, and sharply anti-Judaic typological analysis of the paschal lamb described in Exodus 12. Cohick’s study explores the purpose, sources, and especially the anti-Judaic elements of this homily.

Abstract

This book is an introduction to the laws of oaths and vows of various types as they appear in biblical, Second Temple, and rabbinic sources. These institutions developed over time, and the oaths and vows mentioned in Second Temple literature should not be understood in light of subsequent rabbinic development. On the contrary: it is precisely the Second Temple texts, however obscure they may be, that provide the clues toward understanding the evolution of these institutions in rabbinic literature.

Abstract

This collection of articles is an innovative contribution to religious studies, because it picks up concepts developed in the wake of the so-called “spatial turn”. Religions are always located in a certain cultural and spatial environment, but often tend to locate (or translocate) themselves beyond that original setting. Also, many religious traditions are not only tied to or associated with the area its respective adherent live in, but are in fact “bi-local” or even “multi-local”, as they closely relate to various spatial centers or plains at once. This spatial diversity inherent to many religions is a corollary to religious diversity or plurality that merits in-depth research. The articles in this volume present important findings from a series of settings within and between Asia and Europe
