The literary discourses of this volume on »Muße«, »dosug«, and »prazdnost'« (leisure) open up new perspectives on the development of Russian culture in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries by means of lexical and semantic approaches, and by probing philosophical, production-aesthetic and socio-historical aspects. In four comprehensive essays emanating from the Slavic studies division of the joint project SFB 1015 »Muße« and its international co-operations, questions of how transferable the phenomenon of »Muße« is to Russian literature and culture are investigated. Discursive processes of the assessment and re-evaluation of work, laziness and leisure can act as indicators for gauging societal processes as much as the condoning or discrediting of »Muße«. Besides the history of mentalities, aesthetic developments and, in particular, the emergence of new literary genres are also included.

This volume examines the loanwords found in 18 late-Byzantine histories and chronicles. In order to analyze the lexical interferences in the lexicon of late-Byzantine historical literature, all words were included (except place names and proper names) that substantiate language contact. The editors place special emphasis on the sociolinguistic context in which the loanwords were used.

This is the second volume in a series of volumes which together will provide an entirely new history of ancient Greek (narrative) literature. Its organization is formal rather than biographical. It traces the history of central narrative devices, such as the narrator and his narratees, time, focalization, characterization, and space. It offers not only analyses of the handling of such a device by individual authors, but also a larger historical perspective on the manner in which it changes over time and is put to different uses by different authors in different genres. The present volume deals with time: changes in the order of events (analepsis versus prolepsis), the speed of narration (events may be recounted scenically or in the form of a summary), and frequency (events may be recounted once, repeatedly, or not at all).

Literary scholars have traditionally understood landscapes, whether natural or manmade, as metaphors for humanity instead of concrete settings for peoples actions. This book accepts the natural world as such by investigating how Anglo-Saxons interacted with and conceived of their lived environments. Examining Old English poems, such as 'Beowulf' and 'Judith', as well as descriptions of natural events from the 'Anglo-Saxon Chronicle' and other documentary texts, Heide Estes shows that Anglo-Saxon ideologies which view nature as diametrically opposed to humans, and the natural world as designed for human use, have become deeply embedded in our cultural heritage, language, and more.
