Fictional reconstructions of the Gospels continue to find a place in contemporary literature and in the popular imagination. Present day writers of New Testament fiction and drama are usually considered as part of a tradition formed by mid-to-late-twentieth-century authors such as Robert Graves, Nikos Kazantzakis and Anthony Burgess. This book looks back further to the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries, when the templates of the majority of today's Gospel fictions and dramas were set down. In doing so, it examines the extent to which significant works of biblical scholarship both influenced and inspired literary works. Focusing on writers such as Oscar Wilde, George Moore and Marie Corelli, this timely new addition to the English Association Monographs series will be essential reading for scholars working at the intersection of literature and theology. An Open Access edition of this work is available on the OAPEN Library.

"This book provides an original and comprehensive assessment of the hypotheses concerning the origin of resurrection Christology. It fills a gap in the literature by addressing these issues using a transdisciplinary approach involving historical-critical study of the New Testament, theology, analytic philosophy, psychology and comparative religion. Using a novel analytic framework, this book demonstrates that a logically exhaustive list of hypotheses concerning the claims of Jesus' post-mortem appearances and the outcome of Jesus' body can be formulated. It addresses these hypotheses in detail, including sophisticated combinations of hallucination hypothesis with cognitive dissonance; memory distortion; and confirmation bias. Addressing writings from both within and outside of Christianity, it also demonstrates how a comparative religion approach might further illuminate the origins of Christianity. This is a thorough study of arguably the key event in the formation of the Christian faith. As such, it will be of keen interest to theologians, New Testament scholars, philosophers, and scholars of religious studies".

Was the author of the Pastoral Epistles only a purveyor of other men's Christology? Or is the Christology of the Pastorals the author's own? Does this Christology fall back on a level below Pauline Christology or does it go far beyond it, as some would have it? Hanna Stettler shows that the author was true to Pauline thought by not just repeating what Paul had taught but rather by reinterpreting it for his current time in the Hellenistic language of his days. For this reason the language of incarnation and the parousia is transformed into the scheme of the twofold epiphany of Christ, the Messiah. The author of the Pastorals includes both Synoptic and Johannine thought in order to present a comprehensive picture of the person and work of Jesus Christ.

Stephen Edmondson articulates a coherent Christology from Calvin's commentaries and his Institutes. He argues that, through the medium of Scripture's history, Calvin, the biblical humanist, renders a Christology that seeks to capture both the breadth of God's multifaceted grace enacted in history, and the hearts of God's people formed by history. What emerges is a picture of Christ as the Mediator of God's covenant through his threefold office of priest, king and prophet. With Christ's work as the pivot on which Calvin's Christology turns, Christ's person becomes the goal to which it drives: for Christ mediates our union with God only through union with himself. This is the first significant volume to explore Calvin's Christology in several decades. It clarifies an important but perplexing subject in Calvin studies through its focus on Christ's work in history and allows Calvin a voice in the current theological conversation about Christology.
