Japanese participation in British industry has increased greatly in recent years. While the new investment is welcomed for the jobs it helps create and the injection of new technology and managerial techniques, many people are fearful lest this increased participation should lead to loss of control of British industry by British nationals and adversely affect British competitors and their struggle for global markets. These concerns are made worse by lack of knowledge about just how extensive Japanese managerial participation in British industry is and about how Japanese practices differ. This

Direct foreign investment and the activities of multinational corporations are new dynamic elements in the international economy. This book identifies, theoretically and practically, a Japanese model of multinational business operations which has characteristics differing from the American or ""anti-trade oriented"" type, and casts light on important policy implications concerning direct foreign investment and multinational corporations. By developing a macroeconomic approach to direct foreign investment, instead of the prevalent explanation from the viewpoint of business administration and in

"Wales has one of the highest concentrations of Japanese manufacturing investment in Europe. It provides a case study for examining the economic and social impact of this investment, which is often perceived as being very different from existing foreign investment. The book evaluates this case study, looking at the attraction of Japanese capital to Wales, its impact on the Welsh economy, upon employment, management practice, industrial relations, the community, and upon the Japanese themselves. First published in 1993, this title is part of the Bloomsbury Academic Collections series."--Bloomsbury Publishing.

Fifteen years after Toyota announced it would build a manufacturing plant in the heart of the Bluegrass, Kentucky crafts are being used to help sell Camrys at car dealerships in Japan and sushi and Japanese condiments are widely stocked on grocery shelves in a number of cities across Kentucky. As Japan's newfound economic power leads to increased political power, there is concern that Japan may be turning East Asia into a regional economic bloc to rival the U.S. and Europe. In Regionalism and Rivalry, leading economists and political scientists address this concern by looking at three central questions: Is Japan forming a trading bloc in Pacific Asia? Does Japan use foreign direct investment in Southeast Asia to achieve national goals? Does Japan possess the leadership qualities necessary for a nation assuming greater political responsibility in international affairs? The authors contend that although intraregional trade in East Asia is growing rapidly, a trade bloc is not necessarily forming. They show that the trade increase can be explained entirely by factors independent of discriminatory trading arrangements, such as the rapid growth of East Asian economies. Other chapters look in detail at cases of Japanese direct investment in Southeast Asia and find little evidence of attempts by Japan to use the power of its multinational corporations for political purposes. A third group of papers attempt to gauge Japan's leadership characteristics. They focus on Japan's "technology ideology," its contributions to international public goods, international monetary cooperation, and economic liberalization in East Asia.
