Abstract

The enigmatic nature of Mallarmé's works disconcerted his first readers and they were published at a period when the number of newspaper and periodicals was rapidly increasing. In the last quarter of the 19th century many comments on his writings appeared in print, some were laudatory, others claimed that he wished to found a poetic School of the Unintelligible. Today's reader will find gathered here reviews published when individual works first appeared and critical texts on his work in general. Among the aspects of his influence on his contemporaries which have been little known hitherto are the reactions of those who heard the first performances of Debussy's Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun in 1894 and 1895, and the use that was made of Mallarmé's name in aesthetic and political polemics at the time, associating him with Odilon Redon or Émile Zola. Some of his utterances made at the celebrated Mardis are also recorded here.

Abstract

As the visual representation of an essentially oral text, Sylvia Huot points out, the medieval illuminated manuscript has a theatrical, performative quality. She perceives the tension between implied oral performance and real visual artifact as a fundamental aspect of thirteenth- and fourteenth-century poetics. In this generously illustrated volume, Huot examines manuscript texts both from the performance-oriented lyric tradition of chanson courtoise, or courtly love lyric, and from the self-consciously literary tradition of Old French narrative poetry. She demonstrates that the evolution of the lyrical romance and dit, narrative poems which incorporate thematic and rhetorical elements of the lyric, was responsible for a progressive redefinition of lyric poetry as a written medium and the emergence of an explicitly written literary tradition uniting lyric and narrative poetics.Huot first investigates the nature of the vernacular book in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, analyzing organization, page layout, rubrication, and illumination in a series of manuscripts. She then describes the relationship between poetics and manuscript format in specific texts, including works by widely read medieval authors such as Guillaume de Lorris, Jean de Meun, and Guillaume de Machaut, as well as by lesser-known writers including Nicole de Margival and Watriquet de Couvin. Huot focuses on the writers' characteristic modifications of lyric poetics; their use of writing and performance as theme; their treatment of the poet as singer or writer; and of the lady as implied reader or listener; and the ways in which these features of the text were elaborated by scribes and illuminators. Her readings reveal how medieval poets and book-makers conceived their common project, and how they distinguished their respective roles.

Longuement, la question de la productivité du mouvement surréaliste français sur l'œuvre de Samuel Beckett fut débattue, polarisée entre rejet et acceptation péremptoire. Cette possible influence trouve un point d'appui important dans Samuel Beckett dans les marges du surréalisme , découvrant une œuvre faite de reprises et d'emprunts de la poésie surréaliste. Par un dépouillement attentif des archives beckettiennes incluant correspondance, cahiers préparatoires et publications en revue, Bernard-Olivier Posse propose une méthode philologique mêlant analyse littéraire et perspective sociologique propice à reconsidérer la posture auctoriale de Samuel Beckett. The question of how influential the French surrealist movement has been on the work of Samuel Beckett has been debated for a long time but the answers were only made of peremptory oppositions : either rejection or acceptation. Samuel Beckett dans les marges du surréalisme aims to demonstrate the (ambiguous) way Beckett works with surrealist poetry by a play of quotations which are always repeated, always altered. Based on research on Beckettian archives such as his correspondence, preparatory notes and publications in journals, this book combines literary analysis and sociological perspective in order to understand how Beckett deals with his self-representation as a writer.

Abstract

Cynthia J. Brown explains why the advent of print in the late medieval period brought about changes in relationships among poets, patrons, and printers which led to a new conception of authorship.Examining such paratextual elements of manuscripts as title pages, colophons, and illustrations as well as such literary strategies as experimentation with narrative voice, Brown traces authors' attempts to underscore their narrative presence in their works and to displace patrons from their role as sponsors and protectors of the book. Her accounts of the struggles of poets, including Jean Lemaire, Jean Bouchet, Jean Molinet, and Pierre Gringore, over the design, printing, and sale of their books demonstrate how authors secured the status of literary proprietor during the transition from the culture of script and courtly patronage to that of print capitalism.
