"Using an interdisciplinary framework, Fischer connects media coverage with the state regulation of trans people to show how, despite some increase in positive depictions, negative representations of trans people as deceptive, deviant, and threatening still permeate mass-mediated discourses used to justify, even normalize, state-sanctioned violence against gender non-conforming populations"--

In July 1861 London newspapers excitedly reported two violent crimes, both the stuff of sensational fiction. One involved a retired army major, his beautiful mistress and her illegitimate child, blackmail and murder. In the other, a French nobleman was accused of trying to kill his son in order to claim the young man's inheritance. The press covered both cases with thoroughness and enthusiasm, narrating events in a style worthy of a popular novelist, and including lengthy passages of testimony. Not only did they report rumor as well as what seemed to be fact, they speculated about the credibility of witnesses, assessed character, and decided guilt. The public was enthralled. Richard D. Altick demonstrates that these two cases, as they were presented in the British press, set the tone for the Victorian "age of sensation." The fascination with crime, passion, and suspense has a long history, but it was in the 1860's that this fascination became the vogue in England. Altick shows that these crimes provided literary prototypes and authenticated extraordinary passion and incident in fiction with the "shock of actuality." While most sensational melodramas and novels were by lesser writers, authors of the stature of Dickens, Thackeray, George Eliot, Trollope, Hardy, and Wilkie Collins were also influenced by the spirit of the age and incorporated sensational elements in their work.

"Mediated Narration in the Digital Age examines mediated narration from 1991 through 2018. Peter Joseph Gloviczki considers this pivotal period spanning the rise of the World Wide Web through the growth of social media to understand how contemporary media accounts storied everyday life and times of crisis. He uses examples across media culture to show that complicated issues benefit from a critical post-structuralist approach to journalism, which promotes a communitarian ethos of respect, inclusion, and dialogue. Textual analysis of a wide range of media narratives-from a 2012 YouTube clip outlining a timeline of the Sandy Hook school shootings, to coverage of then-newly-discovered footage of President Roosevelt in a wheelchair in 2013, to the Cincinnati Enquirer's 2017 piece "Seven Days of Heroin"-illustrate how theoretical concepts work in practice while explaining the new media environment. In response to the lack of awareness of news as mediated narration, Gloviczki calls for journalists to be aware of their role in meaning-making and the attendant ethical responsibilities. He provides the analysis essential to effective practice that emphasizes the connection between the individual and the community in order to more fully represent the mediated body. "--

"Most pieces of international news worldwide provided to the public rely on translation. Most of this translation is done not by translators, but by journalists with practically no training in translation. What happens when norms of journalism and those of translation clash? In this book, the author, a trained conference interpreter and former international journalist, takes the example of news translation in Japan and analyses translation choices. Her extensive analysis of texts from six major Japanese newspapers and interviews with Japanese "journalators" focuses on direct quotations, where accuracy is a top journalistic priority but can generate loss of communication impact if implemented rigidly. She argues that many shifts from accuracy can be explained by risk management strategies. 'When News Travels East' provides invaluable insight from an insider about news translation in Japan and beyond and paves the way for further research in the field"--Back cover.

Contemporary popular media has been marked by its startling ability to morph into a wide variety of formats, fed by the ongoing revolution in digital technology. Despite these significant changes, the horror genre has retained its attraction for audiences, and the representation of gender has been crucial to that appeal.Gender and Contemporary Horror in Comic, Games and Transmedia examines the impact of media convergence on the horror genre, focusing on comic books and graphic novels, video games, audio broadcasts, and transmedia adaptations, as well as considering the increasingly proactive role of audiences in making media themselves. A wide range of scholars consider the effect of this new hybridity on established debates regarding the role of gender in the horror genre, offering vital new interpretations of identity and representation. This book is an illuminating, exciting read for academics and students interested in the effect of changing media, and an evolving cultural landscape, on the established debates surrounding gender in the horror genre. The responses of the authors reflect both the possible limitations and the groundbreaking possibilities of this new era in horror.

This book traces the fascinating history of the first Polish gay and lesbian magazines to explore the globalization of LGBT identities and politics in Central and Eastern Europe during the twilight years of the Cold War. It details the emergence of homosexual movement and charts cross-border flows of cultural products, identity paradigms and activism models in communist Poland. The work demonstrates that Polish homosexual activists were not locked behind the Iron Curtain, but actively participated in the transnational construction of homosexuality. Their magazines were largely influenced by Western magazines: used similar words, discussed similar topics or simply translated Western texts and reproduced Western images. However, the imported ideas were not just copied but selectively adopted as well as strategically and creatively adapted in the Polish magazines so their authors could construct their own unique identities and build their own original politics.

This book explores the impact of new forms of online reporting on the BBC's coverage of war and terrorism. Informed by the views of over 100 BBC staff at all levels of the corporation, Bennett captures journalists' shifting attitudes towards blogs and internet sources used to cover wars and other conflicts. He argues that the BBC's practices and values are fundamentally evolving in response to the challenges of immediate digital publication. Ongoing challenges for journalism in the online media environment are identified: maintaining impartiality in the face of calls for more open personal

Examining the ways in which the BBC constructed and disseminated British national identity during the second quarter of the twentieth century, this book is the first study that focuses in a comprehensive way on how the BBC, through its radio programs, tried to represent what it meant to be British. The BBC and national identity in Britain offers a revision of histories of regional broadcasting in Britain that interpret it as a form of cultural imperialism. The regional organization of the BBC, and the news and creative programming designed specifically for regional listeners, reinforced the cu
