This book, based on the SINTEF Offshore Blowout Database, thoroughly examines U.S. Gulf of Mexico and Norwegian and UK North Sea blowouts that occurred from 1980 to 1994. This book reveals the operations that were in progress at the onset of the blowouts and helps you learn from the mistakes of others.

"The truth behind the greatest environmental disaster in U.S. history. In 2005, fifteen workers were killed when BP's Texas City Refinery exploded. In 2006, corroded pipes owned by BP led to an oil spill in Alaska. Now, in 2010, eleven BP workers were killed in the Gulf of Mexico's Macondo blowout. What's next? In In Too Deep: BP and the Drilling Race that Took It Down, Stanley Reed--a journalist who has covered BP for over a decade--and investigative reporter Alison Fitzgerald answer not only the question of what's next but also examine why these disasters always happen to BP and not to the other large oil companies. The book shows that practices put in place by former BP CEO John Browne who was forced to resign after salacious details of his private life emerged in 2007 may have more to do with the disaster than anything, details a BP built on risk-taking and cost-cutting, and examines the past, present, and future of BP. In August 2010, BP successfully "killed" the company's damaged deepwater well. But, the environmental fallout and public relations campaign to rebuild the brand are just beginning. In Too Deep details why BP suffered this disaster, why now, and what's next for the oil giant."--

As with his 1994 book, Advanced Blowout and Well Control, Grace offers a book that presents tested practices and procedures for well control, all based on solid engineering principles and his own more than 25 years of hands-on field experience. Specific situations are reviewed along with detailed procedures to analyze alternatives and tackle problems. The use of fluid dynamics in well control, which the author pioneered, is given careful treatment, along with many other topics such as relief well operations, underground blowouts, slim hole drilling problems, and special services such as

"This book relays the factual details of the BP oil spill. The narrative provides multiple accounts of the event, and readers learn details through the point of view of an online investigator, California student, and Louisiana shrimper. The text offers opportunities to compare and contrast various perspectives while gathering and analyzing information about a modern event"--Provided by publisher.

On April 20, 2010, the crew of the floating drill rig Deepwater Horizon lost control of the Macondo oil well forty miles offshore in the Gulf of Mexico. Escaping gas and oil ignited, destroying the rig, killing eleven crew members, and injuring dozens more. The emergency spiraled into the worst human-made economic and ecological disaster in Gulf Coast history. Senior systems engineers Earl Boebert and James Blossom offer the most comprehensive account to date of BP’s Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Sifting through a mountain of evidence generated by the largest civil trial in U.S. history, the authors challenge the commonly accepted explanation that the crew, operating under pressure to cut costs, made mistakes that were compounded by the failure of a key safety device. This explanation arose from legal, political, and public relations maneuvering over the billions of dollars in damages that were ultimately paid to compensate individuals and local businesses and repair the environment. But as this book makes clear, the blowout emerged from corporate and engineering decisions which, while individually innocuous, combined to create the disaster. Rather than focusing on blame, Boebert and Blossom use the complex interactions of technology, people, and procedures involved in the high-consequence enterprise of offshore drilling to illustrate a systems approach which contributes to a better understanding of how similar disasters emerge and how they can be prevented.

This case study looks at the economic, societal, and environmental impact of the oil spill disaster, the BP Deepwater Horizon, in 2010. The speaker argues that if BP had factored in the possible environmental risks in its operational safety decisions, it could have saved many billions of dollars in reputational damage and fines.
