Abstract

Speculative fiction opens doors for imagining beyond what is possible, conventional or acceptable. Speculative fiction has an acute ear for the social, the scientific and for political developments and change, all of which are prominent topics. Reproduction and parenthood are pertinent social questions that are constantly renegotiated in various arenas. By investigating representations of family-making and reproduction in speculative fiction, the research presented in Populating the Future: Families and Reproduction in Speculative Fiction not only adds to the field of speculative fiction scholarship, but also contributes to the more general discussion about reproduction and parenting.Speculative fiction operates as thought laboratories that make connections between discourses visible. It highlights power structures that can be difficult to detach and represents difficult and abstract issues more concretely. As such, speculative fiction demonstrates the complex entanglement of reproduction with issues of gender, power and agency. By facilitating thought experiments and illustrating alternatives, speculative fiction also enables the representation of new family structures and reproductive technologies, thus paving the way for discussions about various practices and their possible consequences.Due to its multidisciplinary approach, this book will be of value to scholars and students of various disciplines, such as literature studies, philosophy, ethics, political science, the social sciences and gender studies. It will also be a useful resource in teacher training programmes, as well as to a more general audience interested in speculative literature, politics, society, gender and ethics.

Abstract

"Reclaiming a language is a slow-burning process, both deeply personal and intricately connected to the socio-economic, historical and political conditions in which we live. In He Reo Tuku Iho: Tangata Whenua and Te Reo Māori, Awanui Te Huia focuses on the lived experiences of tangata whenua and explores ways in which they can reclaim te reo.Drawing upon findings from the national research project Manawa Ū ki te Reo Māori, which surveyed motivations and barriers for Māori language acquisition and use, Te Huia encourages readers to explore how they can journey back towards te reo Māori in daily life. We hear from tangata whenua learning te reo, and from those who are fluent, while considering challenges to language reclamation - such as experiences with racism, whakamā, historical trauma and resourcing - and ways to overcome these. At the heart of He Reo Tuku Iho is the knowledge that it is possible for Māori to return te reo to minds, hearts and mouths. As Te Huia writes: 'The aroha connection that we all have with our tūpuna, our living relations, and those yet to come, are tied together in our collective desire for te reo Māori to thrive now and in the future'"--Publisher's website.

Abstract

This book presents a sociocultural linguistic analysis of discourses of conflict, as well as an examination of how linguistic identity is embodied, negotiated and realized during a time of war. It provides new insights regarding multilingualism among Ukrainians in Ukraine and in the diaspora of New Zealand, the US and Canada, and sheds light on the impact of the Russian-Ukrainian war on language attitudes among Ukrainians around the world. Crucially, it features an analysis of a new movement in Ukraine that developed during the course of the war – ‘changing your mother tongue’, which embodies what it is to renegotiate linguistic identity. It will be of value to researchers, faculty, and students in the areas of linguistics, Slavic studies, history, politics, anthropology, sociology and international affairs, as well as those interested in Ukrainian affairs more generally.
