Avec l'ambition affirmée de développer une transformation dans l'historiographie en architecture, les trois éditrices de cet ouvrage collectif proposent de faire entendre ceux qui participent à la création architecturale ou à sa réception sans que leurs voix retentissent ni perdurent dans l'histoire officielle. Les essais réunis prennent en compte les expressions inhabituelles, souvent tues, bien que prépondérantes pour témoigner sur les ouvrages et enregistrer une autre histoire de l'architecture, en documentant sa conception autant que sa fortune critique. Intitulée 'A short history of silence', l'introduction du livre incite à l'écoute d'autres mots qui racontent aussi l'architecture, et commence par faire un inventaire de ceux que l'on a depuis longtemps l'habitude de taire au profit d'un discours dominant attendu. Récusant l'absolue paternité d'un architecte sur "son" œuvre elles tendent à élargir le concept d'auteur, en reconnaissant le partage effectif de la création entre plusieurs personnes, par exemple en faisant ressortir la voix du client pour son influence déterminante dans certains processus créatifs. By and large, architectural historians use texts, drawings, and photographs to craft their narratives. Oral testimony from those who actually occupy or construct buildings is rarely taken as seriously. Speaking of Buildings offers a rebuttal, theorizing the radical potential of a methodology that has historically been cast as unreliable. Essays by an international group of scholars look at varied topics, from the role of gossip in undermining masculine narratives in architecture to workers’ accounts of building with cement in midcentury London to a sound art piece created by oral testimonies from Los Angeles public housing residents. In sum, the authors call for a renewed form of listening to enrich our understanding of what buildings are, what they do, and what they mean to people.
