Tussen 1970 en 1990 vond een ongekende vernieuwing plaats van vooroorlogse buurten in de grotere steden van ons land. Wat begon als ‘bouwen voor de buurt’, het protest tegen grootschalige kaalslag, kennen we nu als de ‘stadsvernieuwing’. Grote aantallen betaalbare woningen en maatschappelijke voorzieningen zijn gerealiseerd, maar verdwenen is de economische bedrijvigheid en de openbare ruimte is er kwalitatief lang niet altijd op vooruit gegaan. Buurten zijn soms ook geïsoleerd geraakt van de rest van de stad. Na 1990 komen sommige van de oude stadsvernieuwingswijken in de lift en worden geliefde (en dure) woonwijken. Andere buurten blijven ondanks de vernieuwing problemen houden. Vier ‘probleemwijken’ zijn in dit boek proefgebied: Leiden Havenkwartier, Den Haag Schilderswijk, Rotterdam Feijenoord en Amsterdam Indische Buurt. Ontwerpstudies laten zien op welke wijze economie, infrastructuur en publieke ruimte de sleutels zijn voor nieuwe strategieën bij buurtverbetering. Drie essays beschrijven de geschiedenis van de stadsvernieuwing, de nieuwe opties voor stedelijke vernieuwing en de opgave voor architectuur en stedenbouw op een moment dat de rijksoverheid is gestopt met grootschalige programma’s. Het boek eindigt met een pleidooi en een instrumentarium voor het ruimtelijk ontwerp.
