The conflict between the Israelis and the Palestinians is considered intractable by many, and is frequently characterised by the violence between the two sides. In attempts at peace, the starting point for negotiations is a cessation of violence; beneath this, however, lies a plethora of other issues to be addressed. This unique text brings together Israeli and Palestinian viewpoints on a number of key issues and topics, making clear the points of agreement as well as the views that divide. The chapters deal first with three issues that require compromise and resolution for a

From the middle of the 3rd millennium BC until the coming of Cyrus the Great, southwestern Iran was referred to in Mesopotamian sources as the land of Elam. A heterogeneous collection of regions, Elam was home to a variety of groups, alternately the object of Mesopotamian aggression, and aggressors themselves; an ethnic group seemingly swallowed up by the vast Achaemenid Persian empire, yet a force strong enough to attack Babylonia in the last centuries BC. The Elamite language is attested as late as the Medieval era, and the name Elam as late as 1300 in the records of the Nestorian church. This book examines the formation and transformation of Elam's many identities through both archaeological and written evidence, and brings to life one of the most important regions of Western Asia, re-evaluates its significance, and places it in the context of the most recent archaeological and historical scholarship.

Nationalism, minority, identity, community… These terms which made a comeback in the 1990s take on a particular resonance in the eastern Mediterranean, from the Balkans to Egypt, including Turkey and the Middle East. This is a space crossed by three major political dynamics: strong national affirmations to compensate for an often precarious state legitimacy, mobilization of ethnicity within existing political groups, transnational organization of identities in favour of development. diasporas and the rise of immigration. All these phenomena imperceptibly redefine the place of the State, the relations between groups, in short, the contours of nationalism on the eastern flank of the Mediterranean basin. This collective work which brings together French and foreign specialists aims, in a perspective linking history, sociology and political science, to identify the changes underway. The role of the state as agent of the production of nationalism through its institutions, its elites, its ideology are examined in turn; the persistence and reactivation of multiple affiliations (religious, ethnic); the constitution of transnational communities. All the contributions provide a better understanding of the many dynamics at work in this fragile Eastern Mediterranean.
