Si la Gestalt-thérapie s'inscrit clans une filiation psychanalytique – Fritz et Laura Perls, ses fondateurs, ont d'abord été psychanalystes –. elle repose sur une théorie comme sur une méthode propres. «Gestalt» signifie en allemand forme ou figure, au sens de «prendre forme». Corganisme est indissociable de l'environnement et c'est ce mouvement permanent de transformations réciproques, d'ajustement, qui façonnent l'individu. La pathologie résulte des interruptions, inhibitions et autres accidents qui viennent compromettre cet ajustement perpétuel. Le gestalt-thérapeute recherche avec le patient la mise en mouvement des formes figées pour fluidifier l'échange entre l'organisme et l'environnement. Au-delà, la proposition gestaltiste est une invitation à repenser le rapport de l'homme au monde.
