At the beginning of the first century BC Athens was an independent city bound to Rome through a friendship alliance. By the end of the first century AD the city had been incorporated into the Roman province of Achaea. Along with Athenian independence perished the notion of Greek self-rule. The rest of Achaea was ruled by the governor of Macedonia already since 146 BC, but the numerous defections of Greek cities during the first century BC show that Roman rule was not yet viewed as inevitable. In spite of the definitive loss of self-rule this was not a period of decline. Attica and the Peloponnese were special regions because of their legacy as cultural and religious centres of the Mediterranean. Supported by this legacy communities and individuals engaged actively with the increasing presence of Roman rule and its representatives. The archaeological and epigraphic records attest to the continued economic vitality of the region: buildings, statues, and lavish tombs were still being constructed. There is hence need to counterbalance the traditional discourses of weakness on Roman Greece, and to highlight how acts of remembering were employed as resources in this complex political situation. This interdisciplinary volume traces strategies of remembering in city building, funerary culture, festival and association, honorific practices, Greek literature, and political ideology. The variety of these strategies attests to the vitality of the region. In times of transition the past cannot be ignored: actors use what came before, in diverse and complex ways, in order to build the present.

In Abgrenzung zur romantischen Ästhetik der Originalität geht die Analyse des Textes von Gen 26 und seinen Kotexten von einer Ästhetik der Wertschätzung von Wiederholungen und "Doppelungen" aus. Nach der Vorstellung des rezeptionsästhetischen Auslegungskonzeptes wird der Lektüreprozess von Gen 12,10-20; Gen 20 und Gen 26 rekonstruiert, wobei nicht nur die christliche Sekundärliteratur, sondern auch jüdische Exegesen intensiv einbezogen werden. Die drei Geschichten von der Gefährdung der Ahnfrau und die beiden Brunnenstreit-Erzählungen werden als jeweils neue Folgen sichtbar, die mit Gen 26 in einer erzähltechnisch anspruchsvollen Friedens- und Segensgeschichte ihren Höhepunkt finden. In contrast to the romantic aesthetic of originality, this analysis of the texts of Genesis 26 and its co-texts proceeds from an aesthetic of valuing repetitions and 'doubling'. After presenting the concept of interpretation based on a reception aesthetic, the study reconstructs the process of reading Genesis 12:10–20, Genesis 20 and Genesis 26, considering not only Christian secondary literature, but also making extensive use of Jewish exegeses.

Das biblische Danielbuch selbst formuliert die Erwartung: "viele werden es durchforschen ..." (Dan 12,4 Lutherübersetzung). Die Geschichte der Danielauslegung in Judentum, Christentum und Islam war im August 2006 in Berlin Gegenstand eines wissenschaftlichen Symposiums, dessen Tagungsbeiträge hier vorgelegt werden. Das Themenspektrum beginnt bei dem biblischen Danielbuch selbst und reicht dann über die Danielrezeption im hellenistischen Judentum, im Markusevangelium und in der Alten Kirche (Hippolyt, Ephraem der Syrer, Hieronymus, Theodoret) über Vertreter des Mittelalters (mittelalterliche islamische Literatur, Abravanel, Nikolaus von Lyra) und der Reformationszeit (Luther, Müntzer, Melanchthon, Calvin) bis hin zu Isaac Newton. Texte und Kunstwerke aus allen drei monotheistischen Weltreligionen werden erörtert. Die Aufsätze bilden Einzelstudien, denen in der Regel eine Quelle zugrunde liegt, die entweder aufgrund ihrer Exemplarizität für eine Epoche oder aufgrund ihrer Bedeutung als einer wichtigen Station oder eines Wendepunktes in der Rezeptionsgeschichte ausgewählt wurde. Da bei den meisten behandelten Autoren ihre Danielrezeption zu einem fortlaufenden Kommentar gerinnt, liegt ein besonderes Augenmerk auf der Gattungsgeschichte des biblischen Kommentars.
