Microbial ecology is the study of interactions among microbes in natural environments and their roles in biogeochemical cycles, food web dynamics, and the evolution of life. Microbes are the most numerous organisms in the biosphere and mediate many critical reactions in elemental cycles and biogeochemical reactions. Because they are essential players in the carbon cycle and related processes, microbial ecology is a vital science for understanding the role of the biosphere in global warming and the response of natural ecosystems to climate change. This novel textbook discusses the major process

Micro-organisms play a major role in the geochemistry of the planet, forming the basic stage in the food chain, and thus sustaining the existence of higher evolutionary life. The continuing interaction between these living organisms and the environment, combined with their exploitation by man are shaping the material world today. Over the last few years our understanding has increased considerably due to the development of new technology and the emergence of new paradigms which have enabled the microbiologist to view the microbial world, and its significance to life, with new eyes. Combining the basics of science with the most up-to-date new material, and incorporating high quality photographs and graphics, this book is valuable as both a textbook and reference guide for students and professionals.

Microbial Diversity offers the first comprehensive, in-depth treatment of microbial diversity for undergraduate and graduate students. Using a global approach, it illustrates the impact of microorganisms on ecological and earth system phenomena. Beginning with a detailed treatment of key concepts and methods, including the nature of microbial species, and the use of microscopic, culture, molecular and phylogenetic systematic methods, it then focuses on environmental evolution, biochemical cycling and species interactions. The text's extensive art program, including its 4-color images of microbes, will be available to instructors on CD-ROM, as well as on the web. The website will also feature an interactive microbe area. Combining molecular, genetic and microbial diversity, this textbook presents recent advances in this growing field and connects diversity with ecology and evolution. Microbial Diversity will be a vital resource, as well as an essential text for classroom use.

Several cyanobacterial species can produce powerful toxins that provide a serious threat for water quality, other aquatic organisms, and human health. These harmful cyanobacteria are especially prominent in freshwater ecosystems, and are a major concern for water managers. From a scientific perspective, there are many recent advances in this research area: - Owing to the scientific revolution in genomics, new molecular techniques have been developed that enable the detection of toxic cyanobacteria at a very early stage. - New laboratory culture techniques have enabled eco-physiological studies of toxin production at a detailed scale that was beyond reach until recently. - Remote sensing of freshwater cyanobacteria is a rapidly expanding field, owing to the increased spectral resolution of airborne data. - New computational techniques have led to advanced models on the population dynamics of cyanobacteria. From a management perspective, recognition of the toxins produced by harmful cyanobacteria has recently led to new environmental policies with respect to toxic cyanobacteria in many western countries. The purpose of this work is to provide an up-to-date overview of the advances in our knowledge of harmful cyanobacteria. The work is directed towards graduate students and scientists in aquatic microbiology, aquatic ecology, environmental toxicology, and water management, and academic professionals in water management and environmental policy. "This is an outstanding volume that should be a 'must-see' reference for all scientists and environmental professionals who are interested in cyanobacterial ecology and water quality management." Val H. Smith, University of Kansas, USA .
