Pourquoi croit-on que "c'est de notre faute" ? Pourquoi se sent-on si souvent coupable de telle pensée ou émotion, de tomber malade, de ne rien faire ou même d'aller bien ? Pour s'expliquer un malheur ou un échec, voire pour l'accepter, nous nous disons que c'est parce que nous avons fait quelque chose de mal. "Si j'avais agi autrement, cela ne se serait pas passé." Le mécanisme est tel que la toute-puissante culpabilité arrive à prendre la place du Dieu Unique. Pour l'auteur, c'est un dysfonctionnement qui menace à tout moment de s'interposer entre l'humain et le "Tout-Autre". Mieux : ce n'est pas du côté de Dieu qu'il faut chercher l'accusation. Ainsi, dans l'évangile de Luc, jésus guérit le paralysé en lui disant qu'il est libre de toute faute, comme si c'était la culpabilité qui le paralysait. A la suite de cette partie narrative, Lytta Basset analyse aussi bien le discours sur la culpabilité chez Freud, Dolto ou Miller que celui de certains philosophes (Ricoeur, Nabert) pour finalement discuter les grandes orientations de la pensée protestante sur ce sujet il y aurait moyen d'évangéliser le sentiment de culpabilité. Cette seconde partie reprend le dossier "Culpabilité" de l'Encyclopédie du protestantisme, réédité une première fois sous ce titre dans Entrée Libre n° 48 en 2000

Die Tübinger Dissertation bietet eine Neubesinnung auf die Thematik der Sünde in Gestalt einer Auseinandersetzung mit Julius Müllers Die christliche Lehre von der Sünde (zuerst erschienen 1839–44). Müllers zweibändiges Werk - nach dem Urteil Karl Barths das "wichtigste literarische Spezialwerk, das der schwierigen Materie . bis jetzt zugewendet worden ist" - wird hier erstmalig umfassend dargestellt und als eine Theorie der Freiheit interpretiert, die auf die Einsicht in die Unbegreiflichkeit der Sünde zuläuft. Søren Kierkegaard hat "Müllers Lehre von der Sünde sehr hoch geschätzt und aus ihr für seine Bekämpfung Hegels gelernt" (Emanuel Hirsch). Die entsprechenden Tagebuchnotizen über Julius Müller werden im Anhang zum ersten Mal vollständig in deutscher Sprache dokumentiert. This doctoral thesis from Tubingen presents a new reflection on the topic of sin, in the form of a discussion of Julius Müller's Die christliche Lehre von der Sünde ('The Christian Doctrine of Sin' - first published 1839-44). In the judgement of Karl Barth, Müller's two-volume work is "the most important specialist literary work yet … that has treated this difficult material"; it is presented here for the first time in a comprehensive fashion and interpreted as a theory of freedom which moves towards an insight into the incomprehensibility of sin. Søren Kierkegaard "valued Müller's doctrine of sin most highly and benefited from it in his dispute with Hegel" (Emanuel Hirsch). An appendix documents the relevant diary passages on Julius Müller for the first time in German.
