Summary: In this publication the author Wim Vroom describes how in the Middle Ages the building costs of European cathedrals was financed. This policy of financing was as large and monumental as the cathedrals themselves. The money came from the diocese, the chapter, sometimes the sovereign and from the city. The main costs however were financed by the diocese to which the catherdral to be built belonged. Besides the financing the author treats the building and the changing circumstances in planning and praxis. Special attention is being paid to the financing of the Utrecht cathedral and in short the Cathedral of Sint Peter in Rome.

In de meeste zeventiende-eeuwse tragedies ervaren de hoofdrolspelers dat zij slechts weinig invloed kunnen uitoefenen op de loop der dingen. Zij bereiken niet wat ze zouden willen bereiken of worden door de omstandigheden gedwongen iets te doen dat tegen hun diepste gevoelens indruist. Op deze manier laten toneeldichters zien dat het menselijke zelfbeschikkingsvermogen begrensd is en het uiteindelijk moet afleggen tegen de absolute macht van het toeval of de Fortuin (Fortuna), het Noodlot (Fatum) en de Voorzienigheid Gods (Providentia Dei). Jan Konst, hoogleraar Nederlandse Letterkunde aan de Freie Universität te Berlijn, geeft een indringend beeld van dit krachtenspel. Ruim 35 treurspelen - de hele toneelcanon voor de jaren 1600-1720 - passeren daarbij de revue. Zo wordt een overzicht van het Nederlandse niet-komische toneel geboden tegen de achtergrond van een themacomplex dat kenmerkend is voor het vroegmoderne treurspel: het doen en laten van de individuele mens in relatie tot de werking van Fortuna, Fatum en Providentia Dei.
