A l'heure des délocalisations, de l'automatisation galopante y compris dans les services, des fusions et acquisitions, des privatisations d'entreprises publiques, de la rationalisation dictée par ce que d'aucuns appellent "l'évangile de la compétitivité", n'est-il pas temps de rappeler l'urgence et la nécessité d'un mode d'analyse qui, d'une part, ne réduit pas la force de travail à un coût ou à une ressource que l'on tente d'exploiter au mieux et qui, d'autre part, rétablit la centralité du phénomène travail, dans toutes ses interrelations avec les autres sphères de la vie en société ? La prédominance actuelle du discours économiste et les excès des ses simplifications conceptuelles ne peuvent en effet satisfaire l'exigence intellectuelle de tous ceux qui cherchent à comprendre une réalité de travail plurielle, complexe et multiforme. L'ambition du présent traité est d'ouvrir résolument le débat sur ces questions centrales, en refusant de s'enfermer dans une perspective d'analyse unique. En conséquence, les contributions des différents auteurs s'encadrent dans une grille à trois niveaux qui distingue le plan sociétal, le plan organisationnel et le plan de l'acteur individuel. Loin d'être un livre purement académique, cet ouvrage fournira au gestionnaire et au syndicaliste aussi bien qu'à l'étudiant et au chercheur des clés d'analyse nouvelle des situations concrètes de travail dans le monde d'aujourd'hui.
