This book, together with its companion volume *Theory of Engine Manifold Design Wave Action Methods for IC Engines* aims to report upon the significant developments that have occurred over the last twenty years and show how mature the calculation of onedimensional flow has become. In particular the volumes show how many of the limitations of the Method of Characteristics can be removed by the application of finite volume techniques, resulting in more accurate simulations and giving the further benefit of more rapid and more robust calculations. TOPICS COVERED: - Summary of equations for compressible flow in pipes and at the boundaries - Measuring the characteristics of valves and turbochargers - Design of engine gas flow systems - Case studies of flow in engines - Noise generation in engines, and silencing techniques - Future developments. *Design Techniques for Engine Manifolds* is aimed at practising engineers and students, who wish to get a good understanding of how wave action in the inlet and exhaust manifolds of reciprocating engines affects the performance of the engine. A variety of numerical techniques are presented in some depth, yet the material is considered from an engineering perspective and the use of specialised mathematical notation has been kept to a minimum.

"Preface Electrification is an evolving paradigm shift in the transportation industry toward more efficient, higher performance, safer, smarter, and more reliable vehicles. There is in fact a clear trend to shift from internal combustion engines (ICEs) to more integrated electrified powertrains. Non-propulsion loads, such as power steering and air-conditioning systems, are also being electrified. Electrified vehicles include more electric vehicles (MEVs), hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), range-extended electric vehicles (REEVs), and all electric vehicles (EVs) including battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and fuel cell vehicles (FCVs). This book begins with an introduction to the automotive industry and explains the need for electrification in Chapter 1. Parallels with other industries such as the telecommunications industry are highlighted. Chapter 1 also explains how the paradigm shift began with MEVs, was established by HEVs, is gaining momentum by PHEVs and REEVs, and will be completed by EVs. Chapters 2 and 3 present the fundamentals of conventional vehicles and ICEs, respectively. Chapters 4 through 7 focus on the major components of electrified vehicles including power electronic converters, electric machines, electric motor controllers, and energy storage systems. Chapter 8 introduces hybrid battery/ultra-capacitor energy storage systems with applications in advanced electric drive vehicles"--

Engineering for advancing ground vehicle mobility A standard text and reference for both the educational and professional communities, *Theory of Ground Vehicles* gives aspiring and practicing engineers a fundamental understanding of the critical factors affecting the performance, handling, and ride essential to the development and design of ground vehicles. In view of the growing concerns over environmental impact, energy efficiency, and safety, this new Fourth Edition has been revised and expanded to address these issues and other developments in the field. Retaining the contents and format of previous editions, the Fourth Edition introduces new material to reflect recent advances in ground transportation technology, including: * Computer-aided methods for design and performance evaluation of off-road vehicles and their practical applications * Emissions and fuel economy * Hybrid electric drives and fuel cells and their operating principles * Selection of vehicle configurations for off-road operations * Road vehicle stability control * ISO 2631-1:1997 and its applications to evaluating vehicle ride characteristics As in previous editions, this book focuses on applying engineering principles to the analysis of vehicle behavior. A large number of practical examples and problems are included throughout to help readers bridge the gap between theory and practice. With its broad coverage and pedagogical aids, Theory of Ground Vehicles, Fourth Edition remains the text of choice for students, engineers, and researchers wishing to master and apply basic theory to solve real-world, road and off-road vehicle mobility problems.
