This book explores the factors which govern the range of educational decisions confronting individuals between compulsory school education and university. The data on which it draws come from two surveys conducted in north-west Italy, one of unemployed young people and one of high-school pupils. The author is in effect testing the two fundamental and opposed paradigms of explanation which are generally applied in the sociology of education; one which holds that the individual agents are essentially passive, being either constrained by lack of alternatives or pushed by causal factors of which they are unaware; and the other in which they are regarded as capable of purposive action, of weighing the available alternatives with respect to some future rewards.

The world of work is changing as a result of technological progress, globalisation and population ageing. The future of work holds many opportunities, but also presents distinct risks which tend to be greater for some population sub-groups, including low-educated workers. This report documents how the labour market for low-educated workers in Belgium has evolved in recent years and what the future might hold for them in terms of both job quality and quantity.

How widespread is student disaffection with school in different education systems? What policies and practices are most effective in fostering students’ sense of belonging and participation in school? These questions are of great concern to educators in many countries, not only because of the interrelationship between student engagement at school and learning outcomes, but also because student engagement represents a valued outcome in itself. The OECD PISA provides not only information on students’ literacy skills, but also on their attitudes and values, their social backgrounds, and on important features of the schools they attend.

This book offers a comprehensive overview of ‘out of school’ ethnic minority young people in Hong Kong. The focus is on the extent of the phenomena, reasons behind it and a description of ‘out of school’ life. Employing qualitative research methods and adopting a case study approach that involved fieldwork comprising 15 in-depth interviews and 2 observations with 11 ‘out of school’ ethnic minority young people, this book provides detailed insights into the phenomena. Information gained from an additional 22 in-depth interviews with 20 other stakeholders related to ethnic minority education, from time spent at three schools and key document analysis are also incorporated. Drawing on critical race theory, this book presents a critical discussion of the ‘out of school’ issue for ethnic minority young people in a privileged Chinese context.

Somebody Knows, Somebody Cares: Reengaging Students through Relationship explores approaches to engaging young people in schooling through advocacy models of student support. In Australia, as in many nations, increasing social, cultural and linguistic diversity in school populations is producing complex challenges for education systems, schooling, teaching and learning. This book shares research informed insights into the multi-layered approaches required to support vulnerable students and sustain school-based mentoring programs. This edited collection covers theoretical and empirical perspectives on student disengagement from schooling through these key ideas: • The benefits of advocacy and mentoring programs on learning and school culture, particularly for students who are at risk of disconnection from learning. • Transforming schooling from the bottom up, by listening to students, teachers and principals and supporting educators in the development of situated and dynamic conditions for learning, through school-university partnerships. • The centrality of positive, caring teacher – student relationships, foregrounding emotional connection as a key component of effective learning, derived from the person-centred theory articulated by Carl Rogers. Written by a team of academics, teachers and school principals, Somebody Knows, Somebody Cares: Reengaging Students through Relationship is a valuable resource for teacher educators, principals, teachers, student welfare counsellors and counselling practitioners.
