Abstract

What does the art of painting still mean in today? That is a question that occupies Vincent Geyskens and that he explores in his diverse oeuvre. When we look at images, we look for connections with our world, with the reality we know. Vincent plays with these expectations of images and painting: what do images mean to us, what role do surfaces and paint play in how we read and analyse an image, what links do we make with images we encounter in our everyday life? For the artist, painting is a way of making thoughts concrete and matter visible. His work challenges you, the viewer. Vincent Geyskens uses figurative and abstract elements interchangeably and experiments with different types of surfaces. These range from paper to plastic, from canvas to objects he has found, and in this way he explores the limits and possibilities of the chosen surfaces. Exhibition: Museum M, Leuven, Belgium (27.05.-09.09.2021).

Abstract

Louise Bourgeois (1911-2010) is celebrated today for her sculptures. Less known-and the focus of this publication-is the body of paintings produced by the artist between her arrival in New York in 1938 and her turn to three-dimensional media in 1949. Crucial to her artistic practice, these early works-rarely seen or exhibited-show Bourgeois's deeply personal artistic lexicon. Themes and motifs explored in her paintings coalesced into those that she would continue to mine during her decades-long career: the clock, the spiral, the Femme Maison (a woman's body with a house for a head), and the columnar figures that heralded her totemic Personage sculptures. Informed by new archival research and the artist's extensive diaries, the book's essays and illustrated chronology explore Bourgeois's relationship to the New York art world of the 1940s-transformed by the arrival of European Surrealists and the emergence of the New York School-and her development of a pictorial language combining abstraction, figuration, and storytelling.

Abstract

Professor Francesca Flores d'Arcais's chronological survey of Giotto's life and work incorporates an impressive range of sources, from fourteenth-century Latin and Italian documents to the most recent art-historical investigations. Her international research leads her to important re-attributions of Giottesque paintings and to new insights regarding the execution and dating of famous and less well-known works. The engaging text is illustrated by hundreds of oversize, superbly reproduced photographs - some on double gatefold pages. The illustrations are drawn from new photography of Giotto's paintings, many of which have been recently restored to their original brilliance.
