Abstract

This accessible textbook introduces the foundations of applied econometrics and statistics for undergraduate students. It covers key topics in econometrics by using step-by-step examples in Gretl and R, providing a guide to using statistical software and the tools for econometric analysis in one self-contained resource. Taking a concise, non-technical approach, the book covers topics including simple regression and hypothesis testing, multiple regression with control variables and isolating effects, instrumental variables, dummy variables, non-linear effects, probability models, heteroskedasticity, time series analysis, and other applied statistical tools such as t-tests and chi squared tests. The book uses small data sets to easily facilitate students’ transition from manual statistical calculations to using and understanding statistical software, including step-by-step examples of regression analysis, as well as additional chapters to aid with econometric notation and mathematical prerequisites, and accompanying online exercises and data sets. This book will be a valuable resource for upper undergraduate students taking courses in introductory econometrics and statistics, as well as students in business administration and other fields of study in social sciences utilising quantitative methods. Graduate students may also benefit from the book. Bjørnar Karlsen Kivedal is a Professor at the Faculty of Computer Science, Engineering and Economics at Østfold University College, Norway. Abstract

This book provides a broad picture of solution concepts that are highly applicable to operations and supply chain settings and to explicate these concepts with some of the relevant problems in operations management in multi-agent settings. It discusses different strategic situations like games in normal form, games in extensive form, games of incomplete information, mechanism design, and cooperative games, to solve operations problems of supply chain coordination, capacity planning, revenue and pricing management, and other complex problems of matching supply with demand. The recognition and adoption of game-theoretic modeling for operations and supply chain management problems in multi-agent settings have been a hallmark of operations and supply chain literature research during the last few years. Despite research in operations and supply chain management having embraced both non-cooperative and cooperative game-theoretic solution concepts, there is still an abundance of underutilized concepts and tools in game theory that could strongly influence operations management problems. Additionally, with the increasing digitization of operations and supply chain management, the narrative of problems in these areas focuses on blockchain and smart contracts, platforms, and shared economy. The book profits from these new issues being predominantly multi-agent settings and lending themselves to game-theoretical solution concepts. The book's intended audience is the advanced undergraduate and graduate student community of operations and supply chain management, economics, mathematics, computer science, and industrial engineering. It is also relevant for the research community and industry practitioners who use multi-agent architecture in business problems. .

Abstract

This textbook guides the student step-by-step in developing and solving a DSGE (Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium) model–not only from the technical and conceptual aspects but also through the simulation process of each model. Characterized by a learning-by-doing approach, the book is set apart from the extant textbooks in three ways. First, it performs all the algebra associated with each model, such as the calculation of steady-state and the log-linearization of the model. Second, each model developed has been generated in Dynare, and every chapter is accompanied by a set of codes (mod-files and m-files) that the reader can use to replicate the model developed in every chapter. Finally, the models considered are toy models in the closed and open economy, which allows the student to learn the basic lessons and understand the fundamental relationships of the variables. All of this prepares the student to deal with more complex models. This book is intended for advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate courses in economics, finance, or applied mathematics, as well as practitioners in central banks that use these models daily in the preparation of forecasts or simulations of aggregate variables.

Abstract

This book aims to present an overview of grey system models for time series modelling and forecasting. It is about modelling and forecasting time series with ordinary differential equations, especially when the available samples are extremely limited. Grey system models (GSM) develop sequence operators to nonparametrically identify the underlying dynamics from the limited observations. This book concerns about two important modelling themes, small sample and poor information. The former focuses on the mechanism and methodology of GSMs for small-sample real-number time series, and the latter on the uncertainty quantification of grey number together with its small-sample modelling principles. In this book, a broad entry point to applied data science for students majoring in economic, management science, and engineering is applied, covering a wide range of topics from basic introductory material up to research-level techniques.

Abstract

Strategic behavior in the human and social world has been increasingly recognized in theory and practice. It is well known that non-cooperative behavior could lead to suboptimal or even highly undesirable outcomes. Cooperation suggests the possibility of obtaining socially optimal solutions and the calls for cooperation are prevalent in real-life problems. Dynamic cooperation cannot be sustainable if there is no guarantee that the agreed upon optimality principle at the beginning is maintained throughout the cooperation duration. It is due to the lack of this kind of guarantees that cooperative schemes fail to last till its end or even fail to get started. The property of subgame consistency in cooperative dynamic games and the corresponding solution mechanism resolve this “classic” problem in game theory. This book is a comprehensive treatise on subgame consistent dynamic cooperation covering the up-to-date state of the art analyses in this important topic. It sets out to provide the theory, solution techniques and applications of subgame consistent cooperation in a wide spectrum of paradigms for analysis which includes cooperative dynamic game models with stochastic state dynamics, with uncertain future payoffs, with asynchronous players’ horizons, with random cooperation duration, with control spaces switching and with transferable and nontransferable payoffs. The book would be a significant research reference text for researchers in game theory, economists, applied mathematicians, policy-makers, corporate decision-makers, and graduate students in applied mathematics, game theory, decision sciences, economics and management sciences. "Technically this is a high quality book. It is very relevant to researchers of dynamic games – an area which is very relevant in nowadays research related to complex dynamic systems. The book provides original concepts, ideas and results with relevance." — Dusan Stipanovic “The 2004 Nobel Economics Prize was given to works in economic policies under the concept of time consistency with mathematical construction less general, rigorous and precise than that later developed in this book. The concept and technique of subgame consistency were just published then. In terms of advancement in practical applications this book is highly important theoretically and technically on top of economic interpretation.” — Vladimir Mazalov.

Abstract

This book paints a portrait of social life in America by providing an accessible discussion of empirical economics research on issues such as illegal immigration, health care and climate change. All the studies in this book use the same data source: individual responses to the American Community Survey (ACS), the nation's largest household survey. The author identifies studies that clearly illustrate core econometric methods (such as regression control and difference-in-differences), replicates key statistics from the studies, and helps the reader to carefully interpret the statistics. This book has a companion website with replication files in R and Stata format. The Appendix to this book contains a guide to using the free R software, downloading the ACS and other public-use microdata, and running the replication files, which assumes no background knowledge on the part of the reader beyond introductory statistics. By opening up the hood on how top scholars use core econometric methods to analyze large data sets, a motivated reader with a decent computer and Internet connection can use this book to learn not only how to replicate published research, but also to extend the analysis to create new knowledge about important social phenomena. A more casual reader can skip the online supplements and still gain data-driven insights into social and economic behavior. The book concludes by describing how careful empirical estimates can guide decision making, through cost-benefit analysis, to find public policies that lead to greater happiness while accounting for environmental, public health and other impacts. With its accessible discussion, glossary, detailed learning goals, end of chapter review questions and companion resources, this book is ideal for use as a supplementary volume in introductory econometrics or research methods courses. Matthew J. Holian is Professor of Economics at San Jose State University in California where he teaches classes in Econometrics and Research Methods. His scholarly writing has been published in journals like Public Choice, Ecological Economics and the Journal of the Association of Environmental and Resource Economics. He lives in San Francisco with his wife and daughter.
