Abstract

This brief presents several enhancement modules to Multipath Transmission Control Protocol (MPTCP) in order to support stable and efficient multipath transmission with user cooperation in the Long Term Evolution (LTE) network. The text explains how these enhancements provide a stable aggregate throughput to the upper-layer applications; guarantee a steady goodput, which is the real application-layer perceived throughput; and ensure that the local traffic of the relays is not adversely affected when the relays are forwarding data for the destination. The performance of the proposed solutions is extensively evaluated using various scenarios. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed modules can achieve a stable aggregate throughput and significantly improve the goodput by 1.5 times on average. The brief also shows that these extensions can well respect the local traffic of the relays and motivate the relay users to provide the relaying service.

Abstract

An important means for improving the cost-efficiency in modern mobile radio networks is to dimension the radio access network carefully. Xi Li presents innovative analytical models and algorithms for the dimensioning of the 3G UMTS Radio Access Network (RAN). The proposed analytical models allow efficient and accurate dimensioning for different evolutions of UMTS radio access technologies. The author validates the analytical models by simulations using developed UMTS system simulation models. All presented analytical dimensioning models are implemented into a commercial dimensioning tool. This dimensioning tool is used to help the 3G UMTS network operators to optimize their network infrastructure in order to reduce network costs while still being able to offer desired Quality of Service.

Abstract

In cellular networks, a new generation of CDMA or WCDMA-based networks will start operations in most countries in the near future. The standardized WCDMA technology generates new challenges in radio network planning, optimization and QoS management because of the dynamic nature of its radio interface and various new services and different network operating modes. Moreover, new and modified radio planning phases as well as new field measurements and emphasized QoS management are needed when UMTS networks are designed and optimized. Hence, a practical UMTS planning process must be defined in detail, from dimensioning to optimization tasks. This book follows the UMTS planning process. It is organized in three parts: Part I - UMTS configuration planning; Part II - UMTS topology planning; and Part III - UMTS network functionality. The first chapter in Part I introduces the UMTS and UTRAN systems and radio network planning strategy, and defines a planning process for UMTS. In Chapter 2, the UMTS planning process is covered, and a detailed description of the UMTS power budget is given, with planning threshold examples provided.

Abstract

Interference determines the performance of UMTS radio networks. In order to provide good coverage and high capacity, network operators need to control the effects and dynamics of interference coupling among users and cells. This is a major challenge in planning and optimizing UMTS radio networks. Hans-Florian Geerdes establishes a concise system model, which describes interference coupling and its impact on the network. The system model enables an efficient analysis of radio network performance. It is also the basis for new automatic planning algorithms. Extensive computational experiments on realistic data demonstrate that the presented evaluation and optimization methods are well-suited tools for use in practice.

Abstract

Design and Performance of 3G Wireless Networks and Wireless LANs is for wireless communication system engineers, network engineers, professionals, and researchers. Network architectures of UMTS, CDMA2000 systems, and how major network elements within the 3G networks can be designed, are described. In addition, the authors describe how end-to-end performance for voice and data services can be determined. They also provide guidelines on how radio access networks and core networks can be engineered. Of equal importance, is inclusion of explanations of various wireless LAN standards (IEEE 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11e) and how voice and data services can be offered in the wireless LAN systems. Additional highlights include: * Overview of core principles of wireless communications (e.g., FDMA, TDMA, CDMA), airlink capacity analysis, and evaluation. * Traffic model descriptions and illustrations for circuit-switched and packet-switched services. * In-depth coverage of how base station and radio network controller can be designed to meet capacity requirements. * Discussion of unique design issues in 3G networks, innovative solutions, and possible new 3G features. This material also provides capacity engineering guidelines for 3G networks and wireless LANs. Review exercises are provided at the end of each chapter to facilitate teaching and self study.
