Depuis une dizaine d'années, le contexte politique de la recherche anthropologique en milieu amérindien a beaucoup changé. La nouvelle poussée capitaliste vers les ressources du Nord canadien a provoqué une réaction de défense de leurs droits territoriaux chez les autochtones habitant ces régions. La démonstration du bien-fondé et de la nature de ces droits dans le cadre des négociations avec les autorités fédérales et provinciales a suscité de nombreuses recherches portant en particulier sur l'occupation territoriale et l'exploitation des ressources fauniques. À la lumière d'une expérience d'anthropologie « impliquée », c'est-à-dire venant appuyer une démarche politique amérindienne, l'auteur conclut que l'anthropologue doit être plus conscient que par le passé des buts de sa recherche et de l'utilisation des résultats. In the last ten years the political context of anthropological research in Amerindian communities has changed greatly. Increased capitalist expansion toward the natural resources of the Canadian North has lead Native people living in these regions to defend their territorial rights. The legitimate rights of Native people and the nature of these rights in the framework of negociations with federal and provincial authorities have inspired numerous studies, particularly of territorial occupation and exploitation of animal resources. In the light of an experiment in "involved" anthropology which supports native policies, the author concludes that anthropologists should be more aware than they were in the past of the goals of their research and of the uses made of the results.

This book brings together eleven works by scholars within and beyond geography, to argue the case for a continued engagement with smallholder agricultural studies. The research detailed is largely empirical and draws on a wide spectrum of mixed qualitative and quantitative methodologies. The case studies cover a range of geographic locations, including Brazil, Burkina Faso, South Africa, Botswana, Malawi, Madagascar, Vietnam, and the USA, with greatest emphasis in sub-Saharan Africa. Key themes that emerge include the structural and relative nature of "smallholder" as a category, the dynamic reality of smallholder livelihoods, the importance of smallholder farming and land-use practices to questions of environmental sustainability, and the challenges of vulnerability and adaptation in contemporary human-environment systems. Overall these studies show that smallholder studies are more pertinent than ever, especially in the face of finite resources and global environmental change.

Die Stadt Hannover entwickelte ein Konzept, wie in der Randzone zwischen Stadt und Land das Bedürfnis der Bevölkerung nach Naherholung mit den Interessen des Naturschutzes und einer ökologischen Landbewirtschaftung in Einklang ge-bracht werden kann - eine multifunktionale Landnutzung für den suburbanen Raum. Die Umsetzung dieses Erprobungs- und Entwicklungsvorhabens wurde 2003 vor-gestellt (Schriftenreihe Angewandte Landschaftsökologie, Heft 57). In der vorlie-genden Publikation werden die Ergebnisse der ökologischen, ökonomischen und soziologischen Begleituntersuchungen analysiert und bewertet. Zudem werden zahlreiche Empfehlungen für die Umsetzung von vergleichbaren Konzepten zur multifunktionalen Landnutzung gegeben.
