Abstract

The stepped terraced house is a type of building that meets modern housing requirements: it is economical and offers ample living space with the comfort of terrace and garden. Rising to popularity with the advent of new social movements it was forgotten with the progressive erosion of the new ideas of society and relegated them to obscurity or even to their disqualification as eyesores. Yet the enduring satisfaction of residents and ecological advantages of green houses make terraced housing as attractive as ever. The buildings studied in the book are not only architectural icons today; even today, one can still learn from them about what residential buildings need. One proponent of this building style was Harry Glück; part of his text pleading the case for a green city is printed here.

Abstract

2010 is in many ways a turning point in the fight against poverty. The European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion aims to raise public awareness, to give voice to the concerns of those experiencing poverty and to renew political commitment of the EU and its Member States. The fact that poverty has not decreased in the past decade necessitates a thorough reflection about the design of the European economic and social model. The elaboration of the Europe 2020 strategy is a window of opportunity to put social inclusion at the heart of the policy of the Union. The Belgian Presidency of the EU in the second half of 2010 has selected 3 thematic priorities with regard to social inclusion: minimum income systems, child poverty and homelessness ? as well as a horizontal priority: the active involvement of people experiencing poverty and social exclusion. This book takes stock of the progress made in the past decade and formulates a series of policy recommendations for the next decade, at EU level as well as in the Member States

Abstract

Abstract

The State of Indiana denies one million applications for healthcare, foodstamps and cash benefits in three years because a new computer system interprets any mistake as failure to cooperate. In Los Angeles, an algorithm calculates the comparative vulnerability of tens of thousands of homeless people in order to prioritize them for an inadequate pool of housing resources. In Pittsburgh, a child welfare agency uses a statistical model to try to predict which children might be future victims of abuse or neglect. Since the dawn of the digital age, decision-making in finance, employment, politics, health and human services has undergone revolutionary change. Today, automated systems rather than humans control which neighborhoods get policed, which families attain needed resources, and who is investigated for fraud. While we all live under this new regime of data, the most invasive and punitive systems are aimed at the poor. In Automating Inequality, Virginia Eubanks systematically investigates the impacts of data mining, policy algorithms, and predictive risk models on poor and working-class people in America. The book is full of heart-wrenching and eye-opening stories, from a woman in Indiana whose benefits are literally cut off as she lays dying to a family in Pennsylvania in daily fear of losing their daughter because they fit a certain statistical profile. The U.S. has always used its most cutting-edge science and technology to contain, investigate, discipline and punish the destitute. Like the county poorhouse and scientific charity before them, digital tracking and automated decision-making hide poverty from the middle-class public and give the nation the ethical distance it needs to make inhumane choices: which families get food and which starve, who has housing and who remains homeless, and which families are broken up by the state. In the process, they weaken democracy and betray our most cherished national values. This deeply researched and passionate book could not be more timely.Bron: https://www.amazon.com/Automating-Inequality-High-Tech-Profile-Police/dp/1250074312

Abstract

The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child is acknowledged as a landmark in the development of children's rights. Article 3 makes the child's best interests a primary consideration in all actions concerning children and requires States Parties to ensure their care and protection. This volume, written by experts in children's rights from a range of jurisdictions, explores the implementation of Article 3 around the world. It opens with a contextual analysis of Article 3, before offering a critique of its implementation in various settings, including parenting, religion, domestic violence and baby switching. Amongst the themes that emerge are the challenges posed by the content of 'best interests', 'welfare' and 'well-being'; the priority to be accorded them; and the legal, socioeconomic and other obstacles to legislating for children's rights. This book is essential for all readers who interact with one of the Convention's most fundamental principles.
