Reproduire en grande quantité des cacaoyers d'élite à partir de fragments de ceux-ci est le but poursuivi lors des opérations de multiplication par bouturage ou par greffage. Ces techniques de multiplication végétative sont mises en oeuvre dans les programmes de sélection et d'amélioration du cacaoyer. Elles constituent un cas de figure pour la présentation d'une technique de reproduction utilisée pour bien d'autres végétaux.
