Migrating borders and moving timesanalyses migrant border crossings in relation to their everyday experiences of time and connects these to wider social and political structures. Sometimes border crossing takes no more than a moment; sometimes hours; some crossers find themselves in the limboof detention; for others, the crossing lasts a lifetime to be interrupted only by death. Borders not only define separate spaces, but different temporalities. This book provides both a single interpretative frame and a novel approach to border crossing: an analysis of the reconfiguration of memory, personal and group time that follows the migrants' renegotiation of cross-border space and recalibrations of temporality.

Controlling border crossing has become an urgent concern under conditions of globalization, leading Western governments to introduce increasingly coercive control measures. Far from eradicating spontaneous border crossing, this defensive geography has fuelled illicit people-smuggling markets, and forced asylum seekers and illegalized travellers into increasingly hazardous journeys. Drawing on data from official sources, media reports and lists of deaths collated by non-governmental organizations in Europe, Australia and North America, this book draws direct parallels between the border control policies adopted across the Global North, and a mounting death toll of illegalized border crossers. It analyses the political and material conditions driving contemporary border control policies and discusses the processes that mediate popular and official understandings of border-related fatalities. In seeking to account for, rather than merely count, border-related deaths the book is intended to shift the debate about contemporary border controls towards the acceptance of a more mobility-tolerant future. -- Publisher description. This book analyzes the political and material conditions driving contemporary border control policies and discusses the processes that mediate popular and official understandings of border-related fatalities.

In 1972, the Second Statute of Autonomy came into force as the central constitutional foundation of South Tyrol's autonomy and thus of the protection of the German and Ladin minorities in South Tyrol. With reference to selected areas, such as competences, financial autonomy, language use, education and relations with other autonomies, this book shows how the Statute has proved itself in practice. Legal solutions for the rapidly changing requirements in law and society, for example through digitalisation, are also examined, as are South Tyrol's relations with the region of Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol, municipalities and Europe. This work argues that a conceptual and methodological shift is required in the way that border security is understood, and that a new approach is urgently required. It examines vernacular narratives of the 'crisis' and how they offer insight into citizens' knowledge of the 'crisis', and actually-existing alternatives to fantasies of control.

For a decade now, borders in Europe have been back on the political agenda. Border research has responded and is breaking new ground in thinking about and exploring borders. This book follows this development and strengthens a perspective that is interested in life realities and that focuses on everyday cultural experiences of borders. The authors reconstruct such experiences in the context of different forms of migration and mobility as well as language contact situations and are sensitive to the freedom of the participants. In this way, they empirically identify everyday cultural usage or appropriation strategies of borders as vastly different experiences of borders. The readers of this volume will gain insights into current developments in border research and liefe realities in Europe where borders are (made) relevant.
