""Het hof is hier ontzaglijk briljant", schrijft een vrouw in 1829 nadat ze in het paleis in Brussel een bal heeft bezocht. Het ene jaar resideert koning Willem I in deze stad, het andere in Den Haag. In beide steden beschikt hij over een paleis en een aparte hofhouding. Personen uit de voornaamste adellijke families van het Verenigd Koninkrijk der Nederlanden spelen daarin een sleutelrol. Zowel letterlijk als figuurlijk danst men rond de koning. Mannen die vaart willen brengen in hun ambtelijke of militaire carrière, ondernemers op zoek naar kredieten, kunstenaars die een mecenas nodig hebben, mensen die geen rust kennen zonder ereteken op de borst; ze schakelen allemaal hun netwerk in om het oor van de koning te krijgen en hun wensen te verzilveren. Als makelaars op het pad naar succes spelen vrouwen een belangrijke rol. Op de achtergrond hebben ze meer invloed dan tot nu toe gedacht. Vier jaar lang zocht historicus Joost Welten naar vergeten brieven en dagboeken. Zijn vondsten bieden een intieme inkijk in het hofleven rond Willem I en tonen tegelijk de verstrengeling van dat hofleven met landsbestuur en politiek."--
