Pendant 60 ans, Saul Steinberg (1914-1999), artiste américain d’origine roumaine, a contribué par ses dessins humoristiques au journal The New Yorker. Caricaturiste, illustrateur, graphiste, dessinateur de mode et de publicité, scénographe, c’est un créateur infatigable de livres d’images. Le catalogue, tout comme l’exposition met en exergue une œuvre récemment acquise par le Centre Pompidou : « Art World Viewers », montrée à une seule occasion en 1966. Cette monumentale pièce maîtresse fait l’objet d’un focus détaillé qui explique sa genèse et son histoire.Saul Steinberg n’est ici pas présenté sous le seul angle de la caricature mais comme un artiste aux multiples visages, répertoires et techniques (dessin, collage, intervention sur mobilier, sculpture…). Il a inspiré de très nombreux dessinateurs, notamment Tomi Ungerer, Sempé, Siné, Bosc, Folon ou Roland Topor.
