An Experimental Approach to CDMA and Interference Mitigation was written with the admittedly ambitious intent of filling the gap between communication theory and VLSI implementation, and thus to provide a more general/theoretical approach to the design, development, and testing of a CDMA receiver. As a consequence, the concepts and techniques that are presented turn out to be applicable to a more general kind of digital wireless modems in terms of receiver architecture design and implementation. As the reader will easily find out, the subject of digital modem design and implementation is addressed in the book starting from a theoretical approach (supported by proper bibliographic references), and is followed by application issues, with reference to an ESA experiment assumed as a case study. A complete design flow, from specification to implementation, including testing and final verification is then presented. This leads the reader step-by-step to a thorough understanding of CDMA transmission and detection, and constitutes a practical guidance for the design of VLSI wireless mobile terminals.

Space-Time Processing for CDMA Mobile Communications is one of the first books to: bring together spatial/temporal channel models and analytic performance evaluation techniques; establish a link between smart antenna systems and advanced receiver design techniques; treat smart antennas specifically for UMTS-like communication systems, with applicable simulations and calculations; supply code with Matlab® GUI so readers can run or modify existing simulations or create new ones. The field of smart antenna technology or, more generally, space-time processing is rapidly becoming one of the most promising areas of mobile communications, especially regarding the development of the first practical third-generation mobile communication systems. The authors have addressed many of the most basic questions relating to the use of space-time processing in CDMA-based third-generation systems and have presented models for the integration of space-time processing, error correction coding, and multi-user detection techniques. Included is extensive background information on cellular systems, antenna array theory, smart antenna techniques, performance of basic space-time processors and advanced space-time processors. The book also includes an extensive simulation program written in Matlab®. The simulation code implements both the uplink and the downlink of a UMTS-like communication system. This provides multiple options for simulating system performance using a variety of channel models as well as receiver structures. Space-Time Processing for CDMA Mobile Communications will be an invaluable reference work for engineers and researchers, and a useful source for design engineers enabling them to understand the implications of adding space-time processing systems to CDMA-based communication systems.

This book analyzes the interaction of the CDMA system within a mobile channel environment, emphasizing repeaters, diversities, and other performance-enhancing means. The authors provide a unique and clear description of repeater-embedded networks’ planning, design, and optimization in different scenarios. Simple physically-based expressions are developed and supported by extensive field experience, and provide insight into the network dynamics. CDMA Radio with Repeaters is intended for wireless RF engineers and system architects, and for researchers working on advanced wireless networks, including MIMO systems. The material also provides insight for helping cellular managers and business assess costs and risks. This book is also suitable as a reference book for graduate courses.

Network architectures of UMTS, CDMA2000 systems, and how major network elements within the 3G networks can be designed, are described. In addition, the authors describe how end-to-end performance for voice and data services can be determined. They also provide guidelines on how radio access networks and core networks can be engineered. Of equal importance, is inclusion of explanations of various wireless LAN standards (IEEE 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11e) and how voice and data services can be offered in the wireless LAN systems. Additional highlights include: * Overview of core principles of wireless communications (e.g., FDMA, TDMA, CDMA), airlink capacity analysis, and evaluation. * Traffic model descriptions and illustrations for circuit-switched and packet-switched services. * In-depth coverage of how base station and radio network controller can be designed to meet capacity requirements. * Discussion of unique design issues in 3G networks, innovative solutions, and possible new 3G features.
