Die ‚Millstätter Predigten‘, eine Sammlung von 72 deutschsprachigen Musterpredigten aus der Zeit um 1200, enthalten in geradezu idealtypischer Weise die katechetischen und liturgischen Standardinformationen zu jedem Predigtanlass. Unter den acht großen Sammlungen der Frühen deutschen Predigt, die zwischen 1170 und 1230 entstanden und im europäischen Vergleich ein quantitativ und qualitativ einzigartiges Corpus katechetischer und adhortativer Texte in der Volkssprache ihrer Zeit darstellen, waren nur die ‚Millstätter Predigten‘ bislang unerschlossen; sie waren zugleich das letzte große Textkonvolut aus der Zeit um 1200, das noch nicht durch eine Edition zugänglich gemacht war. Ihre Bedeutung für das Verständnis des theologischen Wissenshorizonts und Wissensbestands von Laien um 1200 kann nicht hoch genug eingeschätzt werden.Die Edition bietet Text, kritischen Apparat und Verständnishilfen, vollständige Nachweise der zugrundeliegenden Bibelstellen und Liturgika, Glossar und Verzeichnisse, in der Einleitung die Darstellung der Überlieferung und Streuüberlieferung, eine Untersuchung des Entstehungskontexts und eine Typologie der Predigtformen. Publication of the Millstatt Sermons opens access to the last yet untapped collection of early German sermons (around 1200). This edition of 72 prototypical German language sermons includes the texts with a critical apparatus, references to Bible passages, a glossary and directories, notes on the transmission history, a study of the context in which they were written, and a typology of sermon forms.

Thierry de Saint-Trond, qui fut abbé du monastère éponyme de 1099 à 1107, fut également, entre autres, l'auteur du sermon de la translation des deux saints patrons de son abbaye: Trudon et Eucher. Ce sermon n'a jamais fait l'objet de recherches approfondies. Les rares historiens qui se sont intéressés à cette œuvre lui dénient toute portée historique, or, les circonstances particulières de sa rédaction ont très vraisemblablement orienté le propos de ce sermon. Nous nous proposons donc de consacrer une étude à l'impact que le contexte historique de rédaction a pu avoir sur le contenu du sermon et aux éventuels messages que Thierry aurait pu glisser dans cette œuvre. La réalisation de ces objectifs passera par une remise en contexte du sermon à l'aide des Gesta abbatum Trudonensium et une analyse de l'œuvre.

In this volume, William C. Mattison, III demonstrates that virtue ethics provides a helpful key for unlocking the moral wisdom of the Sermon on the Mount. Showing how familiar texts such as the Beatitudes and Petitions of the Lord's Prayer are more richly understood, and can even be aligned with the theological and cardinal virtues, he also locates in the Sermon classic topics in morality, such as the nature of happiness, intentionality, the intelligibility of human action, and the development of virtue. Yet far from merely placing the teaching of Aristotle in the mouth of Jesus, he demonstrates how the Sermon presents an account of happiness and virtue transformed in the light of Christian faith. The happiness portrayed is that of the Kingdom of heaven, and the habits needed to participate in it in the next life, but even initially in this one, are possible only by God's grace through Jesus Christ, and lived in the community that is the Church.

Les Homélies sur le Notre Père de Grégoire de Nysse constituent une oeuvre majeure sur la « prière du Seigneur ». Cette série de cinq homélies, qu’il faut situer non au début de la carrière de Grégoire mais dans ses dernières années, a connu une grande postérité, notamment la magnifique « hymne à la prière » de l’Homélie I. À la fois prédication pastorale et exégèse de chacune des phrases du Notre Père – avec des variantes –, elles mettent en lumière l’adoption filiale des chrétiens et présentent la prière comme une conversation avec Dieu. Elles dénoncent aussi le « blabla » des prières creuses, en prônant un ascétisme allié au souci des plus pauvres. Leur nouveauté est plus marquante encore sur la nature du pain « quotidien », sur la venue de l’Esprit Saint comme règne de Dieu, sur le « Mauvais » comme Tentation personnifiée. Avec une ample introduction sur les circonstances des Homélies, leur structure, leurs sources, leur exégèse du Notre Père et leur réception, ainsi que sur l’histoire des manuscrits, l’ouvrage offre un nouveau texte critique accompagné d’une traduction richement annotée.
