Hydrodynamics was long considered a subject for mathematicians and theoretical physicists. Although the engineering subject of hydraulics offers useful formulae for many practical problems, these could only be justified empirically. In the winter semester of 1907/08, the mathematician Felix Klein organised a seminar at Göttingen University with the declared aim of bridging this gap. The participants' contributions show how the gap between theoretical hydrodynamics and practical hydraulics was bridged with modern fluid mechanics.

Le nom de Clemens Heller est étroitement associé à de grandes réalisations en faveur des sciences sociales et humaines dans la deuxième moitié du XXe siècle. Ce créateur d’institutions, de programmes et d’initiatives œuvrait d’abord et surtout au plus près de la recherche en action : auprès des chercheurs et groupes de recherche. C’est pourquoi Clemens Heller, comme l’a dit Wolf Lepenies, « will remain, for innumerable scholars from many countries and disciplines, one of the most impressive administrators on the European scene ». Dans cette perspective, c’est l’expression d’une reconnaissance toute particulière que la première initiative d’hommage international à Clemens Heller, à l’occasion du centenaire de sa naissance, ait été prise en dehors des frontières françaises, dans une grande capitale européenne, à Berlin. Au mois de mai 2017, un colloque en souvenir de Clemens Heller a eu lieu à l’université Humboldt et au Wissenschaftskolleg de Berlin. Organisé par Joachim Nettelbeck sous le titre Clemens Heller, der intellektuelle Entrepreneur, il a réuni des chercheurs et des administrateurs de recherche de plusieurs pays. Le présent volume, préparé pour une manifestation en souvenir de Clemens Heller, organisée sous les auspices de la FMSH à la Maison Suger à la fin de l’année 2017, reprend une partie des communications présentées à Berlin. D’autres chapitres ont été rédigés directement pour ce volume.

Besides affecting the development of roots directly, the physical environment also influences the organisms associated with roots and thus affects their function. The papers presented in this volume pay equal attention to root development and root function in relation to the whole range of environmental factors including temperature, light, water, aeration, gravity and the mechanical strength of the soil. Consideration is also given to the effects of some of these factors on mycorrhizae and nitrogen-fixing bacteria. The final chapter reviews some of the main themes raised in the volume and indicates the way that research at the cellular and tissue levels may progress in the future.
