Abstract

The global environmental crisis, technological developments, the COVID-19 pandemic, and ongoing economic and political globalization are just a few of the developments that are massively increasing the pressure for transformation on regions, companies and society as a whole. In addition, the digital age is accelerating transformation processes that are already underway. This contributed book addresses these developments and presents a novel framework for transformation research and practice, which has been developed and already validated at RWTH Aachen University. The RWTH way includes inter- and transdisciplinary approaches from many disciplines, looking at technological and societal change from different perspectives. A distinction is made between analysis, i.e., research on transformation processes, impact, i.e., transformational research, and change in research itself, i.e. research transformation. The book not only creates a new understanding of transformation research, but also provides actionable impulses for scholars and practitioners in many fields. This is an open access book.

Abstract

Engineering institutions worldwide are undergoing significant transformation as they work to adapt themselves to the learning needs of students in the 21st century, changing trends in the requirements of the industry and society, and growing concerns about issues related to sustainable development and climate change. Future engineering graduates must be equipped to tackle complex problems in society that are aligned with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). There are increasing calls for engineering institutions to create quality learning experiences for students, enabling them to develop deeper learning skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, life-long learning, leadership skills, and the ability to work in teams. Engineering curricula must be made multidisciplinary, innovative, and outcome-driven by integrating evidence-based pedagogies and learning mechanisms. For this to happen, academic leaders must reimagine their institutions with significant changes at the administration, governance, and leadership levels. Establishing new-age institutions that meet international accreditation standards requires dynamic academic leaders at multiple levels who can work collaboratively to achieve the vision and mission of the institution. This book is an attempt to share key learnings from academic leaders from around the world on important trends emerging in engineering education. Aspiring academic leaders will get a glimpse of the thought process and vision of such leaders, how they strategize and support their institutions for the betterment of the students, and what kind of changes they are working on to keep up with the ever-evolving environment. The book is divided into four sections. Each section comprises multiple chapters written by different academic leaders that are based on their experiences of implementing best practices at their respective institutions. Section 1 - Governance and Leadership of Engineering Institutions Section 2 - Creating Quality Learning Experiences Section 3 - Preparing Institutions to become Knowledge Hubs for Research, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship Section 4 - Empowerment of Faculty and Students for the 21st Century The sections and chapters will be of great value to multiple stakeholders in leadership positions at engineering institutions including Presidents, Vice-Chancellors, Provosts, Directors, Deans, Heads of Departments and Faculty members aspiring to be academic leaders. Each chapter will be presented through case studies from successful programs initiated and pioneered at various engineering institutions across the globe.

Abstract

This book explores how stretching stories through posthuman and autoethnographic perspectives can produce new stories that decolonialize traditional thinking and approaches to Early Childhood Education (ECE). It demonstrates how stories can provide a different way of knowing, and a way of knowing differently: a way of decolonializing current discourses of early childhood education within educational institutions. The book uses research and practice in ECE to act as a canvas, a context with which to explore how autoethnography can become other when viewed through a posthumanist lens. As a consequence the chapters and stories within allow for an interplay between the posthumanist and the autoethnographic, an interplay that allows for a very specific type of meaning to emerge; a meaning that traffics in numerous and disruptive possibilities rather than settled certainties. In so doing, authors rethink and perturb the notion of child-centered approaches to knowing, be(com)ing, and doing within the Early Childhood Education.

Abstract

The book aims to converge the perspectives of authors, editors, and reviewers to discuss modern scientific publishing practice and emerging concerns in the contemporary world. Authors, editors, and reviewers form a triage in a publishing ecosystem which is witnessing a huge pressure due to changing evaluation criteria for career progression and grant funding. The major perspective of this book is to put forth the present-day emerging ills of modern publishing system and sensitize the research fraternity - be it young researchers or established scientists towards practicing good science and preserving spirit of scientific discoveries. The edited book consists of three parts viz, Part I “Authors, Authorship, and Scholarly Dissemination” features ten chapters devoted to describe authorship issues and good publication practice, plagiarism concerns, preprints, open access models, conflicting interests, rise of review papers, writing book reviews, and assessing faculty beyond metrics. Part II “Editors, Editorial Desks, and Issues of Scientific Misconduct” features eight chapters devoted to discuss on issues of editorial misconduct, desk rejections, paper mills, letters to editors, image duplication, emerging ChatGPT in writing/reviewing spaces, citation cartels, and retractions. Finally, Part III “Reviewers and Developing Evaluator’s Eye” features five chapters devoted to discuss peer review as an idea creating model, paying peer reviewers, training reviewers, peer review manipulations, and peer review in age of AI . All chapters in the book are written by expert contributors of the field that provides a systematic approach of understanding various challenges, opportunities, and ethical considerations of scientific publishing ecosystem. Most of the chapters have featured recent cases of scientific misconduct as examples to reflect scale of the problem. This book will serve as a reference to research practitioners in understanding assigning authorship on papers, modern-day publishing collaboration, role of editors to serve journals in a holistic manner and ensuring fair peer review mechanisms.
