The Royal Pavilion, Brighton, is one of the most famous and opulent royal extravaganzas in existence. First built in 1787 for the Prince of Wales as a neo-classical marine villa, it had by the time the Prince became king in 1820 grown into the extraordinary indian/chinese fantasy it is today. This book reproduces for the first time all the important surviving designs, used and unused, for the exterior and interior of the Pavilion. It reveals the great variety of brilliantly exotic schemes devised for its construction and decoration. The projects for the exterior range from the pretty but chaste designs of Henry Holland through the wilder indian and chinese fantasies of William Porden and Humphry Repton - the last providing ravishing garden designs - to the grandiose palace of John Nash. The interior designs, executed mainly by the Crace firm of decorators and Robert Jones (all firmly controlled by the king) are always splendid and often astonishing ; they include schemes for whole rooms as well as for individual details such as windows, skylights, doorways, carpets and curtains : the whole impedimenta of sophisticated luxury. The range includes the "barbaric" chinoiserie of the 1802-4 period (including some designs of an extreme surrealism), the enchanting "rococo" chinoiserie of 1815-17, and the opulent richness of the final scheme. The techniques used include illusionistic painting, marbling, faux graining, faux skies - often in a vein of high fantasy. The 308 illustrations, of which 111 are reproduced in colour, capture all the variety, magnificence and exotic luxury of the extraordinary building.

The pavilion is the architectural form of the moment, enabling emerging architects to make their mark. Often ephemeral and orientated to a specific function, they are less expensive than their more permanent architectural cousins, which allows for more experimentation or inventiveness than in larger structures. Tents, bandstands, displays, places for sitting, listening, seeing, and being seen, pavilions have myriad forms and as many functions. For architects and designers, they offer unique opportunities to experiment with form, construction, material, structure, surface, and texture, often as prototypes for larger buildings or as purely artistic pursuits. A pavilion's particular location also offers rich possibilities for interaction with the landscapes, streetscapes, and peoplescapes around it. Pavilions can be temples to digital interaction or provide oases of calm and isolation. The New Pavilions features a selection of the best examples produced in recent years, more than eighty projects, chosen by Philip Jodidio, one of the most widely knowledgeable writers on global architecture. From the cutting-edge forms of Sou Fujimoto to Zaha Hadid's Chanel pavilion, from small structures created entirely out of farm waste to a mirrored carapace conceived by Olafur Eliasson, each pavilion provides a lesson in the extreme possibilities of built form and demonstrates that many of the biggest ideas in architecture start small.

As economic problems make some shy away from grandiose, long-lasting buildings, a wave of new temporary buildings and architecture is sweeping over the planet. These can have uses from emergency relief to concert or performance venues. Another fascinating area that is covered here is exhibition and fair design, a veritable treasure trove of exciting designs that come and go in the space of a week or less, to showcase fashion, jewelry, or design. Fashion shows or art displays are all part of this dynamic trend that includes some of the great names in contemporary architecture like Zaha Hadid or Rem Koolhaas, but also many architects that you have never heard of until now!Featured architects and practices include: Werner Aisslinger, Atelier Bow Wow, Aybar Mateos, Cecil Balmond, Shigeru Ban, Bernardes Jacobsen, BIG, Alberto Campo Baeza, Carmody Groarke, Santiago Cirugeda, Coop Himmelb(l)au, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Ecosistema Urbano, Olafur Eliasson, Ammar Eloueini, Essentia, Established & Sons, Fantastic Norway, Mark Fisher, Massimiliano Fuksas, Laurent Grasso & Pascal Grasso, Zaha Hadid, Heatherwick, Institute of Computational Design, Toyo Ito, Adam Kalkin, Ken Min Architects, Koers Mulder, Adolf Krischanitz, Liu Jiakun, LOT-EK, MAPT, Miralles Tagliabue, MOS, Eric Owen Moss, NASA, Ivan Navarro, Jean Nouvel, OBRA Architects, OMA, OMD, John Pawson, Philippe Rahm, Raumlabor Berlin, Francesc Rifé, Michel Rojkind, Rotor, Tomás Saraceno, SO-IL, Tamassociati, Javier Terrados Cepeda, UNStudio, Helena Willemeit, Tokujin Yoshioka
