En 1795 fut fondée à Paris l’École des langues orientales vivantes. Garcin de Tassy y reçut la chaire d’hindustani, créée en 1828. L’on doit de nombreux travaux à ce grand savant, qui connaissait également l’arabe, le persan et le turc ; il s’est intéressé en particulier à la langue ourdoue et à la religion musulmane. Le présent ouvrage, après une introduction historique sur les études indiennes en Europe aux xviiie-xixe siècles, retrace le parcours de cet érudit et présente l’ensemble de son oeuvre littéraire dans une étude divisée en cinq rubriques: langue et littérature hindoustanies, traductions, sociologie et islamisme, comptes rendus et notices nécrologiques, oeuvre inédite. The School of Living Oriental languages was founded in Paris in 1795. Garcin de Tassy held the chair of Hindustani there, which was created in 1828. Many important works are attributed to this great scholar, who was equally well versed in Arabic, Persian and Turkish. He was interested primarily in the Muslim religion and the Urdu language. The present volume first gives a historical introduction to Indian studies in Europe in the 18th-19th centuries A.D. It then traces the career of this scholar and presents the entire range of his literary works in five parts: Hindustani language and literature, translations, sociology and Islamic studies, book reviews and obituaries, unpublished works.

The volume extends the mainly European focus of the series 'Historiography and ldentity' to probe into a more global perspective, exploring the historiographical cultures of a number of Eurasian macro-regions: China, Japan, Iran, South Arabia, Syria, Byzantium, Lotharingia, and Spain. The broader, Eurasian perspective can contribute to a deeper understanding of the very different ways in which works of historiography could communicate, promote, and negotiate 'visions of community' and concepts of belonging. Der Band erweitert den Schwerpunkt der Reihe 'Historiography and ldentity' auf eine globale Perspektive. Im Fokus stehen historiographische Kulturen in verschiedenen Makroregionen Eurasiens: China, Japan', Iran, Südarabien, Syrien, Byzanz, Lotharingien und Spanien. Diese breitere, eurasische Perspektive kann zu einem tieferen Verständnis der sehr unterschiedlichen Wege beitragen, auf denen in historiographischen Werken„Visionen von Gemeinschaft" und Konzepte von Zugehörigkeit kommuniziert, verbreitet und verhandelt wurden.

The concept and study of orientalism in Western culture gained a changed understanding from Edward Said's now iconic 1978 book Orientalism. Especially in Germany, however, recent debate has moved beyond Said's definition ofthe phenomenon, highlighting the multiple forms of orientalism within the "West," the manifold presence of the "East" in the Western world, indeed the epistemological fragility of the ideas of "Occident" and "Orient" as such.This volume focuses on the deployment -- here the cultural, philosophical, political, and scholarly uses -- of "orientalism" in the German-speaking and Central and Eastern European worlds from the late eighteenth century to thepresent day. Its interdisciplinary approach combines distinguished contributions by Indian scholars, who approach the topic of orientalism through the prism of German studies as practiced in Asia, with representative chapters by senior German, Austrian, and English-speaking scholars working at the intersection of German and oriental studies. Dans L'art du livre en Asie centrale de la fin du XVIe au début du XXe siècle , Marie Efthymiou met en lumière le riche patrimoine manuscrit de cette région encore mal connue. Traditionnellement rattaché au seul monde iranien, il apparaît au confluent de riches transferts culturels et de vastes circuits d'échanges, où émerge le rôle majeur de l'Inde du Nord et d'importantes spécificités locales. Grâce à l'analyse méticuleuse des manuscrits coraniques de l'Institut Al Bīrūnī, Marie Efthymiou décrit les mutations des techniques de fabrication du livre, renouvelant la connaissance du papier de Samarcande et révélant le dynamisme de Kokand comme centre de production. Un questionnement novateur des usages du livre en restitue la place dans la société et les pratiques de dévotion. In L'art du livre en Asie centrale de la fin du XVIe au début du XXe siècle , Marie Efthymiou sheds light on the rich cultural heritage of Central Asia, a still relatively unknown region. Traditionally considered part of a single Persian cultural domain, it in fact bears witness to a rich convergence of cultural transmissions and trade routes, with strong external influences from North India as well as strong local characteristics. By a meticulous analysis of the Quranic manuscripts of the Al Bīrūnī Institute of Oriental Studies, Marie Efthymiou depicts the technical changes of bookmaking, providing new evidence on Samarcand paper and revealing Kokand as a major centre of production. An innovative approach of the manuscripts' uses traces their place in society and in the everyday life of worshippers.
