Abstract

This book describes the role of the neutrophil in infection and inflammation and provides an up-to-date review of the biochemistry and physiology of these cells, highlighting the mechanisms by which they seek out and destroy pathogenic micro-organisms. The development of these cells during haematopoiesis is described and the mechanisms which lead to the production of reactive oxidants and the intracellular signal transduction systems which lead to the cell's activation are reviewed. The book also discusses recent discoveries concerning the role of cytokines in the regulation of neutrophil function together with the importance of the neutrophil as a generator of inflammatory cytokines. Finally there is a description of the biochemical defects that give rise to some of the neutrophil-associated human diseases.

Abstract

This dissertation by Daniel Söderberg explores the role of innate immunity in the pathogenesis of ANCA-associated vasculitis (AAV). It examines the mechanisms by which neutrophils and their extracellular traps (NETs) contribute to the chronic inflammation characterizing AAV, a group of autoimmune diseases affecting small blood vessels. The research highlights the dysregulated production and clearance of NETs and their interaction with ANCA, suggesting a vicious cycle of inflammation. By investigating the behavior of neutrophils and the regulatory roles of B and T cells, the study aims to enhance understanding of AAV and inform better therapeutic strategies. The intended audience includes medical researchers and professionals interested in immunology and inflammatory diseases.

Abstract

This dissertation by Andreas Skallberg explores the use of photoemission-based surface analytical techniques to study biological phenomena at the cellular and molecular levels. It focuses on visualizing neutrophils, a type of white blood cell, using advanced imaging methods like X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and photoemission electron microscopy. The research highlights the formation of extracellular traps in neutrophils and the application of nanoparticles as contrast agents in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The study also presents innovations in reducing annealing temperatures in silicon-based processes using europium-doped gadolinium oxide nanoparticles. This work is intended for researchers and professionals in nanotechnology, biology, and medical imaging, aiming to enhance understanding and applications of analytical imaging tools.
