The volume collects the reports presented during the study day held in San Miniato on December 1, 2007, dedicated to the historiographical investigation and to an assessment of the long archaeological research conducted on the site of San Genesio in the lower Valdarno, a village that witnessed settlement continuity from Antiquity to the middle thirteenth century and which was definitively abandoned following a violent destruction by the inhabitants of the nearby village od San Miniato al Tedesco. From written sources we know that the locality is renown for relevant political meetings and assemblies held there between the 11th and 12th centuries; these assemblies were destined to play a significant role in the wider context of municipal Tuscany. The inhabited area was brought to light during an almost ten-year excavation campaign that has provided very important results making it a very interesting case study. The volume is a comparison between historical and archaeological methodology and aims to highlight the great utility of interdisciplinary collaboration on the analysis of especially relevant samples. At the same time, it provides a first overall picture on the history of an abandoned centre offering a rich and exceptionally documented past, proposing a point of reference for other similar investigations intended to shed light on political events, on ecclesiastical institutions and on the dynamics of population in the Medieval Italy.

The social and political organization and the power culture of an important medieval city-state constitute the glue of the essays recollected here. The approach to the history of Genoa concerns different aspects, which lie outside from the mere small town reality, with raids on the territory especially in Riviera di levante. It is a history of enterprising men, which project in different directions their own ambitions and their desire to achievement. The homely strategies, the social dynamic, the language of institutio and society come together to outline the unsettled orders of Genoa which tries, unsuccessfully, to come in the fifteenth century to government and representation forms similar to ones completed in others Italian spheres.

The organisation of the territory is the outcome of strategies of varying scope, in which a number of agents interact to shape out the areas of operation. The Liguria reality is probed here through four different situations - separated in chronological terms but sharing the poor visibility and limited efficacy of the fortified settlements. These focus on Genoa, both in the definition of its hinterland between the tenth and the eleventh centuries, and in establishing the bulwarks of coastal territorial expansion in the twelfth; the powerful groups of feudal lords who remoulded the rural settlement layout in the thirteenth century; finally, a village of the hinterland explored right through to the modern age. L'organizzazione del territorio è l'esito di politiche di diverso respiro, in cui interagiscono una varietà di attori che sempre riconfigurano spazi di intervento. La realtà della Liguria è qui sondata attraverso quattro situazioni separate cronologicamente ma accomunate da bassa visibilità e scarsa efficacia dei castelli che vedono protagonisti Genova, sia nel definire il suo circondario tra secolo X e XI sia nel fissare i caposaldi dell'espansione territoriale costiera nel secolo XII; potenti gruppi signorili che nel secolo XIII riplasmano l'assetto insediativo rurale; un villaggio dell'entroterra investigato fino all'età moderna

During late Middle Ages the space corresponding to Papal State showed some features similar to those of Central-Northern Italy, sharing others with the Southern Kingdom. This interesting mix can be tested observing statutory law, that, regarding this period, has abundantly survived, although revealing remarkable regional differences. The interplay between cities and villages in this situation is complicated by Papal power, which participates in that relationship, affecting it with a varying intensity and continuity.In this book we try to specify the “three parts game” that happened during the legislative process, considering also other players action, such rural lords. The work includes four essays about the four lands forming the Papal State and other three about nearer lands, i.e. Florentine Tuscany, Siennese one and the Sicilian Kingdom (reserving a special attention at Abruzzo), and suggests useful comparisons, one of the project paramount aims. The scholars invited to join the enterprise, each specialist of a single land, during their research considered other’s results, notwithstanding the physical distance among each other. Thus, we try to offer a homogeneous picture, at least regarding powers interplay dynamics. Lo spazio territoriale dello Stato della Chiesa nel tardo Medio Evo mostra alcune caratteristiche proprie dell’Italia centro-settentrionale, ma al contempo se ne distingue per altre che lo avvicinano al Regno meridionale. Questa interessante miscela può essere verificata nella normativa statutaria, che si è conservata abbondante per il periodo, anche se con alcune notevoli differenze regionali. L’interazione fra i centri urbani e quelli rurali trova qui una complicazione nella presenza del potere pontificio, che si inserisce nel rapporto fra i due soggetti condizionandolo, anche se con differente intensità e continuità.In questo volume si cerca di dettagliare il “gioco a tre” che l’attività normativa delle campagne comportava, senza dimenticare la possibile presenza di altri attori, come i signori rurali. Dedicando quattro studi alle quattro realtà regionali comprese nello Stato della Chiesa e altri tre a realtà finitime, cioè la Toscana fiorentina, quella senese e il Regno di Sicilia (con un’attenzione particolare all’Abruzzo), il libro suggerisce proficui confronti, che sono stati comunque una delle idee portanti del progetto. I singoli studiosi che sono stati invitati a partecipare all’iniziativa, ognuno specialista di una specifica area, pur non lavorando in stretto contatto, hanno comunque tenuto presenti i risultati delle ricerche condotte dagli altri, in modo da fornire un quadro il più possibile omogeneo, almeno per quanto riguarda le dinamiche dell’interazione fra i tre poteri.

This book, generated by the encounter between two schools - the Italian early mediaeval and the Argentine late antique - ranges from Italy to Gaul and the Eastern Mediterranean over a timespan from the third/fourth to the eighth centuries. It introduces a world polarised between an East destined to be divided between Byzantium and Islam, and a West composed of the post-Roman barbarian societies. The East, rooted within the Roman-Hellenistic heritage, represents a source of religious experiences which profoundly influence the West. With reference to Italy, the study focuses on an analysis of the Episcopal network, the emergence of the Benedictine Rule, and the correspondence of Gregory the Great. In the passage from East to West, the 'new' Barbarian societies emerge in the front line, proving that they too were seeking out ancient roots, both in Gaul and in Italy, the latter being partly still linked to Byzantium and partly under the dominion of the Lombards. Finally various crucial aspects of the Lombard kingdom - which proves to be profoundly permeated by the legacy of Rome - are addressed, including royalty, the capitals and the law, through the analysis of both written and archaeological sources. Questo libro, frutto di un incontro fra due scuole, quella altomedievistica italiana e quella tardo-antica argentina, spazia dall'Italia, alla Gallia, al Mediterraneo orientale, nei secoli dal III/IV all'VIII, presentando un mondo polarizzato fra un oriente destinato a dividersi fra Bisanzio e l'Islam e un occidente costituito dalle società barbariche post-romane. L'oriente, radicato nell'eredità romano-ellenistica,è presente come fonte di esperienze religiose che influenzano profondamente l'occidente. Qui, in riferimento all'Italia, si analizzano la crescita della reteepiscopale, le più antiche vicende della Regula benedettina, l'epistolario di GregorioMagno. Nel passaggio dall'oriente all'occidente emergono in primo piano le nuove società barbariche, che si rivelano anch'esse alla ricerca di radici antiche, sia inGallia che in Italia, quest'ultima in parte ancora legata a Bisanzio, in parte sottoil dominio dei Longobardi. Del regno longobardo, che si rivela profondamentepermeato dall'eredità romana, si presentano infine aspetti importanti (la regalità, le capitali, il diritto), analizzando fonti scritte ed archeologiche.
