Ces questions, il arrive que des écrivains s’essaient à y répondre dans des œuvres qui donnent un supplément d’existence à des personnages – les leurs ou ceux des autres.C’est à cette pratique, qu’on propose d’appeler transfictionnalité, que cet ouvrage est consacré. S’il s’interroge sur son étendue, s’il en répertorie les formes et les ramifications, c’est, chaque fois, pour examiner les enjeux d’un phénomène qui a quelque chose de proliférant. Un monde fictif est-il borné par le récit qui l’instaure ? Qu’advient-il de l’autorité d’un auteur sur « ses » personnages lorsque des continuateurs s’aventurent dans les interstices de leurs histoires, jettent sur eux un nouvel éclairage ou réinventent leurs destins ? Les récits transfictionnels ne répondent pas à ces questions mais, les faisant surgir, nous enjoignent de reconnaître à quel point l’exercice de la fiction nous confronte à des contradictions inextricables et fertiles.

Literaire werken staan zelden of nooit volledig op zichzelf. Ze enten zich op literaire tradities, op buitenlandse of binnenlandse invloeden, vloeien bijna als vanzelf voort uit het oeuvre van een auteur of maken gebruik, van andere culturele codes om een nieuw literair product te realiseren. In de Nederlandse literatuur is dat niet anders. Ook daarin circuleren immers allerlei soorten bronnen als basis voor romans, dichtbundels of andersoortig literair werk. Dat kan gaan van sage - of legendemateriaal, over beeldmateriaal, naar citaten uit het eigen oeuvre van een andere auteur. Belangrijk daarbij is op te merken hoe dat bronmateriaal steevast 'muteert' bij het overbrengen van de ene literaire context naar de andere. Interteksten krijgen een eigen invulling of gaan een dialoog aan met de nieuwe omgeving waarin ze ondergebracht worden. Oraal materiaal wordt omgewerkt naar een schriftelijke context. Buitenlandse invloeden krijgen een lokale touch mee. En ook eigen werk kan een nieuw leven ingeblazen krijgen wanneer het wordt ingeschakeld in een nieuw boek. De auteurs raken op verschillende wijze deze kwesties aan en geven een overzicht van de verschillende manieren waarop er word 'herschreven' in de Nederlandse literatuur.

La bande dessinée s'est toujours inspirée du patrimoine littéraire, qu'elle continue d'adapter. Mais beaucoup de ces adaptations ont mauvaise réputation. On les accuse non seulement de simplifier les récits d'origine mais aussi d'être mal dessinées, bref de desservir en même temps la littérature et la bande dessinée. La vogue récente des adaptations littéraires dans le domaine du roman graphique permet de revenir sur certains lieux communs et d'interroger les formes et enjeux de ce type de transpositions, aujourd'hui souvent ambitieuses et fort originales. Richement illustré, le présent livre fait le point sur cette nouvelle tendance dont il examine à la fois les défis et les réussites. Le but qu'il poursuit est double : montrer d'abord qu'une adaptation littéraire peut être aussi audacieuse et créative qu'un récit original ; prouver ensuite qu'une bonne adaptation n'est pas obligée, contrairement à ce qui se répète partout, de s'éloigner de son modèle. Les meilleures adaptations littéraires en bande dessinée sont fidèles à leur texte-source, sans pour autant le reprendre de manière servile. Les divers aspects d'une adaptation littéraire en bande dessinée — du besoin de raccourcir le texte ou de réduire le nombre de personnages à la nécessité d'associer un visage à une voix en passant par la difficulté de dessiner un "ton" ou un "style" — sont examinés ici à travers une sélection représentative d'œuvres récentes. "Adaptation constitutes the driving force of contemporary culture, with stories adapted across an array of media formats. However, adaptation studies has been concerned almost exclusively with textual analysis, in particular with compare-and-contrast studies of individual novel and film pairings. This has left almost completely unexamined crucial questions of how adaptations come to be made, what are the industries with the greatest stake in making them, and who the decision-makers are in the adaptation process. The Adaptation Industry re-imagines adaptation not as an abstract process, but as a material industry. It presents the adaptation industry as a cultural economy of six interlocking institutions, stakeholders and decision-makers all engaged in the actual business of adapting texts: authors; agents; publishers; book prize committees; scriptwriters; and screen producers and distributors. Through trading in intellectual property rights to cultural works, these six nodal points in the adaptation network are tightly interlinked, with success for one party potentially auguring for success in other spheres. But marked rivalries between these institutional forces also exist, with competition characterizing every aspect of the adaptation process. This book constructs an overdue sociology of contemporary literary adaptation, never losing sight of the material and institutional dimensions of this powerful process"--
