Abstract

The text used for this edition of Euripides' Hecuba is based on the editor's own manuscript studies; a prose translation, introduction and detailed commentary are provided. The introduction and the commentary treat the structure of the play and its parts, the interpretation of it, and also problems of staging it; they also give historical and factual information. They are written in such a way that they can also be used by readers without a knowledge of Greek.

Abstract

In medieval Byzantium Hecabe was Euripides' most popular tragedy, so that it is this play for which we have the most manuscripts. Although this means that the production of a critical editionto satisfymodern criteria is particularly difficult, such an edition can now be presented. It comprises a revised text, a collection of testimonials, an extensive textual criticism, a prose translation, an introduction that pays particular attention to the history of the transmission and the reception of the text, an extended commentary and metrical analyses of the lyrical passages.

Abstract

"Set at the end of the Trojan war, Euripides' Trojan Women depicts the women of Troy as they wait to be taken into slavery. While choral songs recall the death-throes of the great city, the scenes between the old queen, Hekabe, and the women of her family explore the consequences of the defeat, from the rape of Cassandra, through the triumphant self-exculpation of Helen, to the pitiful death of Astyanax, thrown from the walls of his ravaged city. Barbara Goff sets the play in its historical, dramatic and literary contexts, providing a scene-by-scene analysis which brings out the pace and intellectual vigour of the play. The main themes are fully discussed, and the book also introduces readers to the issues that have divided critics, such as the extent to which the play responds to the historical events of the Peloponnesian War. The final chapter, which deals with reception, offers new insights into several modern works."--BOOK JACKET.

Abstract

A.J. Keulen’s new commentary on Seneca’s Troades is the fruit of a lifetime devotion to this play. This extensive philological commentary on the Troades is a most welcome contribution to the study of Seneca’s plays. Meaning, history and usage of Seneca’s vocabulary are thoroughly discussed. The author provides ample comparison with Senecan prose and rival poets. In addition, the commentary addresses composition and word order, and discusses textual, metrical and grammatical difficulties. A full bibliography and three indices complete this valuable book.
