Abstract

This book provides selected results from the accompanying research of the project CROME. The vision of the project was to create and test a safe, seamless, user-friendly and reliable mobility with electric vehicles between France and Germany as a prefiguration of a pan-European electric mobility system. Major aims were contributions to the European standardisation process of charging infrastructure for electric mobility and corresponding services, and to provide an early customer feedback.

Abstract

The main objective of this Thesis is to study the impact of the new IFRS 16 standard on the financial statements of the largest European airlines companies. This standard replaces IAS 17 and came into force on January 1, 2019. It has significantly modified the presentation of the accounts of a large number of companies including those operating in the air transport sector. A first theoretical part is followed by an in-depth analysis of concrete cases. The implementation of IFRS 16 aims to improve transparency and financial reporting on leases to financial statement stakeholders. It makes it easier for companies to assess the overall liability of each entity and provides a comprehensive and understandable picture of all leases. This change is the most significant in decades as it completely changes the way leases are recorded. For any airline that uses operating leases to dispose of aircrafts, the impact is important. As the results observed in the empirical part underline, the airlines that use the largest portfolios of operating leases are the most affected. The balance sheet total of lessees and key financial ratios change significantly with IFRS 16. All of these impacts are approached in a theoretical and empirical way.

Abstract

The next generation of driver assistance systems and highly automated driving functions are based on digital maps. In order to meet the high requirements on the correctness and up-to-dateness of this information, this work presents new automated methods to extract up-to-date map information from fleet data. The focus is on the inference of static intersection information from fleet data through machine learning and statistical methods.

Abstract

During the late eighteenth century, a musical–cultural phenomenon swept the globe. The English square piano—invented in the early 1760s by an entrepreneurial German guitar maker in London—not only became an indispensable part of social life, but also inspired the creation of an expressive and scintillating repertoire. Square pianos reinforced music as life’s counterpoint, and were played by royalty, by musicians of the highest calibre and by aspiring amateurs alike. On Sunday, 13 May 1787, a square piano departed from Portsmouth on board the Sirius, the flagship of the First Fleet, bound for Botany Bay. Who made the First Fleet piano, and when was it made? Who owned it? Who played it, and who listened? What music did the instrument sound out, and within what contexts was its voice heard? What became of the First Fleet piano after its arrival on antipodean soil, and who played a part in the instrument’s subsequent history? Two extant instruments contend for the title ‘First Fleet piano’; which of these made the epic journey to Botany Bay in 1787–88? The First Fleet Piano: A Musician’s View answers these questions, and provides tantalising glimpses of social and cultural life both in Georgian England and in the early colony at Sydney Cove. The First Fleet piano is placed within the musical and social contexts for which it was created, and narratives of the individuals whose lives have been touched by the instrument are woven together into an account of the First Fleet piano’s conjunction with the forces of history. Note: Volume 1 and 2 are sold as a set ($120 for both) and cannot be purchased separately.

Abstract

This book provides a complete history of the US Fleet Ballistic Missile programme from its inception in the 1950s and the development of Polaris to the deployment of Trident II in 1990. Writing in an accessible yet scholarly manner, Graham Spinardi bases his historical documentation of FBM development on interviews with many of the key participants. His study confronts a central issue: is technology simply a tool used to achieve the goals of society, or is it an autonomous force in shaping that society? FBM accuracy evolved from the city-busting retaliatory capability of Polaris to the silo-busting 'first strike' potential of Trident. Is this a case of technology 'driving' the arms race, or simply the intended product of political decisions? The book provides a comprehensive survey of the literature looking at the role of technology in the arms race, and seeks to explain technological development using a 'sociology of technology' approach.

Abstract

“Centrale de Services à Domicile” (CSD) is a non-profit organisation based in Seraing and is a member of the mutual insurance company Solidaris. Its mission is to provide rapid assistance to people who want or need home help. This thesis focuses on the transport department which consists of driving people in need to their non-urgent medical appointments. To do this, the company offers four ways of assistance: transport using its own fleet, transport by volunteers, transport for people with reduced mobility and transport by ambulance. At present, the last two means are subcontracted to an external company that only handles requests from the Stavelot region. Therefore, the company wishes to improve its service range to its beneficiaries by offering its own adapted transport service for people with reduced mobility, and more particularly for people in wheelchairs. The aim of this work is therefore to study the various possibilities open to CSD Liège, to propose a decision-making tool and to put forward the solutions that best suit the case of CSD. With this in mind, the work first examines the internal workings of the department and sets out avenues for improvement. It then proposes an analysis of the external environment, mainly through a benchmark and an in-depth analysis of legislation. Then, the demand is estimated with the objective of determining the optimal fleet configuration. From then on, this section makes it possible to answer questions such as: How many vehicles to buy? How many wheelchair spaces should the fleet contain? And per vehicle? How many drivers should be assigned to the project? Where should the depots be located? Finally, the project must be budgeted. An Excel decision-support tool is then proposed. It compares the purchase price of the vehicles and their adaptations as well as the cost of use according to the various parameters entered by the user. The cost of human resources is also taken into account to provide a break-even calculation. The break-even point depends on the selling price offered to the beneficiaries, for which various simulations are presented.

Abstract

This, the second of three volumes of the correspondence of George Brydges Rodney, covers the admiral's life from the end of the Seven Years War in 1763 until August 1780. This was perhaps his most eventful, extraordinary and controversial period; from being a successful admiral, a member of Parliament and the Governor of Greenwich Hospital, Rodney plunges into debt and a debtor's exile in France, only to rise again as a victorious admiral and as a national hero. At the end of the Seven Years War Rodney was disappointed and bitter at the failure of the British government to reward him for his prominent part in the capture of Martinique and other French islands in the West Indies. He was made baronet in 1764 and governor of Greenwich Hospital in 1765. He had already been a member of Parliament for Saltash in 1751-4, and sat for Okehampton, Penryn and Northampton consecutively between 1759 and 1774. In 1768 he was involved in one of the most costly elections in eighteenth century parliamentary history. He secured election at Northampton, but his finances were broken. Furthermore, he had begun to gamble heavily and, with a limited income, fell into the hands of moneylenders. In 1770 he attempted to recoup his finances by becoming Commander-in-Chief at Jamaica. Nevertheless in the West Indies until 1774 Rodney managed a successful period of diplomacy with Spain, of intelligence gathering, and of navigational surveying especially off the coast of Florida. Even so, he returned to England deeply in debt and was forced to flee to France to escape his creditors. The war with the American colonies proved to be Rodney's salvation. After war with France had broken out, in 1779 the British government was desperate for an admiral who could fight and win battles. Rodney was appointed Commander-in-Chief in the Leeward Islands. His success in battle and skillful conduct of the naval war in the West Indies in 1780 restored Rodney's public standing. The stage was set for his most famous victory, the Battle of the Saintes in 1782, and the restoration of his private finances. George Brydges Rodney had gone through a dramatic change of fortunes. The character of that man is revealed here. This volume will permit re-assessment of this outstanding British admiral of the American War of Independence for a new generation of historians.

Abstract

This volume will appeal to everyone interested in how the Royal Navy adapted to the use of air power in the Second World War and provides a new and vital perspective on how Britain fought the War. This is the first of three volumes detailing the history of the Fleet Air Arm, the Royal Navy's aircraft carriers and naval air squadrons, during the Second World War. It deals with the formative period between 1939 and 1941 when the Fleet Air Arm tried to recover from the impact of dual control and economic stringencies during the inter-war period while conducting a wide range of operations. There is in depth coverage of significant operations including the Norwegian campaign, Mediterrranean actions such as the attack on the Italian Fleet at Taranto and the Battle of Cape Matapan, and the torpedo attacks on the German battleship Bismarck. Incidents involving the loss of and damage to aircraft carriers, including the sinking of Ark Royal, one of the most famous ships in the early years of World War Two, are also reported. Of major importance are key planning and policy issues. These include the requirements for aircraft carriers, the evolving debate regarding the necessary types of aircraft and attempts to provide sufficient facilities ashore for naval air squadrons.
