Die Studie hinterfragt die in der Forschung postulierte semantische Differenz zwischen den verschiedenen Konstruktionstypen bei Psychverben. Die angenommene Unterschiedlichkeit in der Kausalstruktur wird unter Einbeziehung logisch-philosophischer und linguistischer Argumente sowie Erkenntnissen der psychologischen und neurowissenschaftlichen Emotionsforschung widerlegt. Es wird gezeigt, dass sich Psychverben hinsichtlich ihrer kausalen Semantik in charakteristischer Weise von Handlungsverben unterscheiden. Psychverben weisen einheitlich eine bidirektionale Kausalrelation auf, die die inner- und übereinzelsprachliche Konstruktionsvielfalt nach sich zieht. Basierend auf kognitiv-semantischen Betrachtungen zur übereinzelsprachlich weit verbreiteten Polysemie von Psychverben und eines funktionalistischen Syntaxmodells wird aufgezeigt, durch welche anderen Mechanismen, wenn nicht durch Unterschiede in der Rollen- und Kausalstruktur, die syntaktische Realisation der Psychverb-Argumente determiniert wird. Grundlage ist eine empirische Untersuchung der Psychverb-Konstruktionen in fünf genetisch und typologisch unterschiedlichen europäischen Sprachen: Deutsch, Estnisch, Türkisch, Lasisch und Baskisch.
