Abstract

Abstract

"Understanding our own feelings and emotions is a vital concern of all of us. If we mean to guide our own actions, feelings and emotions are at the heart of our problem. If we need to guide the actions of others, they are a key to our problem. And if we are theorists pure and simple, hoping only to understand life, they are an unsolved problem. And what a welter of cross pressures and dark sayings surrounds it! Emotions must be eliminated for effective thinking, emotions must be controlled for social living--but emotions must be expressed for healthy development. Emotions must be examined physiologically--or psychologically. Emotions are organizing--or disorganizing. Emotions are centrally initiated--or are peripherally determined. These views are but illustrative of lines of emphasis which recur in discussions of the topic. Yet all this can be reconciled and understood if we follow the right lead. In the following pages, Lawrence K. Frank offers an analysis of the nature of the affective processes and provides a basis for integrating the wide variety of scientific and clinical findings. He starts with the mammalian heritage of man, elaborates and integrates the concept of homeostasis, and develops the transactional approach. In reviewing genetic development with this orientation, he reformulates the mechanisms of the unconscious, transforming them from the static and reified form descriptions so frequently give to them into truly dynamic aspects of the functioning of the organism in an understandable manner. He shows the link between repression, displacement, projection and physiological reactions preparing the organism for fight or flight. Further, his approach emphasizes the naturalness of emotional reactions and affective responses. We must live with such reactions and responses; and Frank, by providing a proper basis for understanding them, shows how we can integrate them effectively for more adequate social participation. In this paper, he also gives to the concept of the organism-personality an integrated and concrete development"--Preface. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved).

Abstract

"In this work the author treats the emotions as psychical acts, but does not overlook their physiological concomitants and effects. The author states that there are four elements involved in emotions. First, there is the affection, or what the author prefer calling the motive principle, or the appetence. Secondly, there is an idea of something, of some object or occurrence, as fitted to gratify or disappoint a motive principle or appetence. Thirdly, there is the conscious feeling. Fourthly, there is an organic affection. He who can unfold these four elements and allot to them their relative place and connection will clear up a subject which is only imperfectly understood at present, and show what emotion is in itself, and what its place in the human constitution. Each of these aspects has been noticed in works written both in ancient and modern times. But so far as is known to the author, the four elements have not been exhibited in their combination and their mutual relation by any one. In the first part of this book, the author devotes a chapter to each of the elements of emotion. In the second part of the book, the author classifies and describes the emotions. In the third part of the book, the author discusses complex emotions".

Abstract

"This book consists of two parts. The first studies the more general manifestations of feeling: pleasure and pain, the characteristic signs of this form of psychic life, everywhere diffused under manifold aspects; then the nature of emotion, a complex state which in the order of feelings corresponds to perception in the order of knowledge. The second deals with the special emotions. This detailed study is of great importance for reasons which will be explained later on, especially because we must not rest in generalities; it furnishes a means of control and verification. The nature of the emotional life cannot be understood unless we follow it in its incessant transformations--that is to say, in its history. To separate it from social, moral, and religious institutions, from the aesthetic and intellectual movements which translate it and incarnate it, is to reduce it to a dead and empty abstraction. Thus an attempt has been made to follow all the emotions one after the other in the progress of their development, noting the successive movements of their evolution or their retrogression. The pathology of each emotion has been sketched to complete and throw light on the study. I have tried to show that beneath an appearance of confusion, incoherence, and promiscuity, there is, from the morbid to the normal, from the complex to the simple, a conducting thread which will always bring us back to the point of origin. A work which has for its aim to set forth the present situation of the psychology of feeling and emotion might have been made very long. By eliminating every digression and all historical exposition, it has been made as short as possible"--Preface.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved).
