Abstract

Long recognized as 'America's theologian', Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758) is seen as instrumental in the Great Awakening of the 1740s that gripped much of New England and that laid the groundwork for an American Protestant religious identity. This Cambridge Companion offers a general, comprehensive introduction to Jonathan Edwards and examines his life and works from various disciplinary perspectives including history, literature, theology, religious studies, and philosophy. The book consists of seventeen chapters written by leading religious scholars, historians and literary critics on Edwards' life, work, and legacy. The Companion will be an invaluable aid to teachers and scholars and will be imminently accessible to those just encountering Edwards for the first time.

Abstract

No one will question the paramount importance of the subjects discussed in this volume. I have aimed to throw light upon them, by tracing out their connections with the element of freedom. Of the measure of my success, let the philosophical and candid reader be the judge. I give this volume as a contribution to philosophy, and to the moral and immortal interests of man. If I have followed the strict method of the one, I hope I have manifested no less, a hearty love for the other. This volume comprises the fifth and sixth divisions of my original plan, announced in the Introduction to my Review of Edwards. Although my conclusions may be rejected by many, still I will not have failed in a good result, even in respect to them, if my lucubrations shall serve in any measure to awaken, or to increase, in them, a spirit of research with respect to these subjects.

Abstract

Russell B. Goodman tells the story of the development of philosophy in America from the mid-18th century to the late 19th century. The key figures in this story, Jonathan Edwards, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, the writers of The Federalist, and the romantics (or 'transcendentalists') Emerson and Thoreau, were not professors but men of the world, whose deep formative influence on American thought brought philosophy together with religion, politics, and literature. Goodman considers their work in relation to the philosophers and other thinkers they found important: the deism of John Toland and Matthew Tindal, the moral sense theories of Francis Hutcheson, Adam Smith, and David Hume, the political and religious philosophy of John Locke, the romanticism of William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and the transcendental idealism of Immanuel Kant.--
