Abstract

Cultural heritage is one of the concepts that have made an unusual career in the 20th century. The cultural codes associated with it - senses, meanings, and ideas, characteristic for specific local or national communities, and the tangible and intangible assets, became a space for new fascinations as well as scientific, regional, social and amateur exploration. These multiple searches for the truth showed that the essence of heritage is portrayed in the choice transforming the cultural goods into "our heritage". The areas of culture, which are given axiological sense by individuals or communities, are usually protected and communicated to the next generations. There are various forms of communication - individual as well as collective oral tradition, institutional - public, private and non-governmental distinctive for organizations which select the phenomena and artefacts important from the point of view of their meanings.
The texts included in the monograph present an enormous potential of the group of phenomena belonging to the tangible and intangible cultural heritage as well as its management. They also bring new findings and research perspectives, point to interesting meanings and associations, which are characteristic of this area of interdisciplinary research. By touching the local and universal as well as private and institutional, the authors show that the field of cultural heritage and its management can still offer a lot to explore...

Abstract

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the UN in 2015 have influenced the actions of international and intergovernmental organisations and governments around the world, and have dictated priorities for international aid spending. Culture, including heritage, is often presented as fundamental to addressing the SDGs: since 2010, the United Nations has adopted no fewer than five major policy recommendations that assert its importance as a driver and enabler of development. Yet, heritage is marginalized from the Sustainable Development Goals.0Rethinking Heritage for Sustainable Development constitutes a substantial and original assessment of whether and how heritage has contributed to three key dimensions of sustainable development (namely poverty reduction, gender equality and environmental sustainability) within the context of its marginalisation from the Sustainable Development Goals and from previous international development agendas.0Sophia Labadi adopts a novel, inclusive, large-scale and systematic approach, providing the first comprehensive history of the international approaches on culture (including heritage) for development, from 1970 to the present day. This book is also the first to assess the negative and positive impacts of all the international projects implemented in sub-Saharan Africa by a consortium of UN organisations that aimed to provide evidence for the contribution of heritage for development in time for the negotiation of the SDGs. The book?s conclusions provide recommendations for rethinking heritage for development, while reflecting on the major shortcomings of the selected projects.

Abstract

Through the voices of over 20 Hadrian's Wall enthusiasts - chosen amongst prominent frontier scholars and archaeologists, re-enactors, curators, walkers and site managers - this volume celebrates the 1900th anniversary of Hadrian's visit to Britain and the building of the Wall. Together, the authors explore issues such as the impact of environmental changes on archaeology and the innovative technologies used in monitoring and managing the Wall and its collections. The book highlights not only the ways in which Hadrian's Wall can be protected for future generations, but also the ways in which it affects the identities of those who work and travel along it. Rather than a retrospective of work undertaken so far, or an attempt to impose theoretical frameworks onto a living landscape, it offers a realistic discussion of current issues and solutions in the exploration, management and protection of Hadrian's Wall, from the point of view of those living, visiting, researching and working along it.

Abstract

"This book discusses the role of cultural practices and policy for sustainable development in West Africa across different artistic disciplines, including performance, video, theatre, community arts and cultural heritage. Based on ethnographic field research in local communities, the book presents findings on current debates of cultural sustainability in Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon and Benin. It provides a unique perspective connecting cultural studies, conflict studies and practical peacebuilding approaches through the arts. The first part pays particular attention to aspects of social cohesion and the circumstances of internally displaced persons e. g. caused by the Boko Haram insurgency in Northeast Nigeria. The second part focuses on cultural policy issues and challenges in the context of sustainable development, investigating participatory approaches and bottom-up processes, the role of governments and civil society, as well as performing arts organizations and universities in policy making and implementation processes. Performing Sustainability in West Africa presents research results and new methods on the role of artistic and cultural practices in conflict situations as well as current debates in cultural policy for researchers, academics, NGOs and students in cultural studies, sustainable development studies and African studies".
