This book presents the characteristics and properties of starches for raw materials grown in tropical climates. It allows comparing starches from 3 types of storage organs, roots, tubers and rhizomes, with different morphological structures and physiology. It contains the methodologies of extraction and analysis, describing the commercial process with the commercial equipment’s and its by-products and wastes. It also includes topics on fraud detection, nutritional aspects, and starch structure.

"Postharvest Technology of Perishable Horticultural Commodities describes all the postharvest techniques and technologies available to handle perishable horticultural food commodities. It includes basic concepts and important new advances in the subject. Adopting a thematic style, chapters are organized by type of treatment, with sections devoted to postharvest risk factors and their amelioration. Written by experts from around the world, the book provides core insights into identifying and utilizing appropriate postharvest options for maximum results. This book is an essential resource for undergraduate and postgraduate students, lecturers and researchers, as well as all professionals involved in the handling of horticultural food commodities."--

The high standard of today's agricultural practices in western countries can be attributed to the great advances achieved in agricultural sciences since the second world war. This has led to a better understanding of plant physiology and the interaction between plants and their natural cohabitants, the latter of which can be direct competitors for the available nutrients and space, or pathogenic intruders of plants (fungi, nematodes, insects, rodents). This book presents an overview of all aspects of modern agricultural practices. Beginning with a concise historic overview of modern trends in agriculture, it leads into chapters dealing with fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, acaricides, nematocides, rodenticides, molluscicides, plant growth regulators, and biological control agents. In each chapter, corresponding practical and theoretical aspects are discussed, and each entry is accompanied by its chemical structure, physical properties, synthesis, agricultural use, trade names, toxicology, and its ecological significance. The book is a valuable source of information for those involved in modern agricultural practices. The reader will find not only fast answers to both general and specific questions, but also access to the broader literature.

Abiotic stresses are the major cause that limits productivity of crop plants worldwide. Plants have developed intricate machinery to respond and adapt over these adverse environmental conditions both at physiological and molecular levels. Due to increasing problems of abiotic stresses, plant biotechnologists and breeders need to employ new approaches to improve abiotic stress tolerance in crop plants. Although current research has divulged several key genes, gene regulatory networks and quantitative trait loci that mediate plant responses to various abiotic stresses, the comprehensive understanding of this complex trait is still not available. This topic is focused on molecular genetics and genomics approaches to understand the plant response/adaptation to various abiotic stresses. We welcome all types of articles (original research, method, opinion and review) that provide new insights into different aspects of plant responses and adaptation to abiotic stresses. Articles describing genome analysis to identify key candidate genes, regulatory network analysis, epigenetic regulation, discovery of novel genetic variations, QTL identification using linkage mapping and association mapping approaches, genetic engineering, molecular breeding and novel approaches for understanding and manipulation of abiotic stress response, are welcome.
